In Western astrology, there are four qualities of planets called “essential dignities.” These qualities refer to the strength or weakness of a planet in a certain sign. The four essential dignities in modern astrology are:

  • Domicile – Strong
  • Detriment – Weak
  • Exalted – Strong
  • Fall – Weak

When planets are in domicile or exalted, they are strong. The qualities of that planet and sign may come easier to you. If a planet is in detriment or fall, it is weaker. It doesn’t mean anything bad per se. It just means you may have to work harder in those areas of your life.

When a planet is “in domicile” that means it is in its home sign. The planet is in the sign that it rules. Because each sign has a planetary ruler, each planet has a domicile, and some planets have two.

In traditional astrology, there is more of a belief that planets can be “good” or “bad.” In modern astrology and psychological astrology, planets are not good or bad, but simply contribute to someone’s overall life situation and personality. According to modern astrology, the qualities of a planet in domicile come easily to those who have this in their natal astrology chart.

Some astrologers consider domicile to be the most prominent and beneficial of the four essential dignities.

When a planet is in domicile in transit, certain people may feel the qualities of that planet more strongly, depending on their own natal placements.

Table of Planets and Their Domiciles

Like everything in astrology, there are a few debates about which planets are in domicile in which signs. People who follow traditional astrology don’t believe that Uranus, Neptune, or Pluto rule any signs. So, those are called modern rulers and are used as planetary rulers only by people who follow modern astrology.

Neither one is absolutely correct, though people in the astrology community certainly have strong feelings about it.

Qualities of Each Planet in Their Domicile According to Modern Astrology

Mars in Aries

Mars in Aries people know how to get things done. The planet of passion (and anger) is at home here and it shines. They can motivate people with their fiery energy. However, their passion can overtake a group, especially if they are not the leader. Mars in Aries people usually prefer to take charge.

Venus in Taurus

When Venus and Taurus pair up in a natal astrology chart, beauty, commitment, and pleasure reign supreme. People with this placement know how to create comfort and beauty in their lives. They prefer loyal relationships rather than casual ones. However, they can easily flip the scale to hedonism, making choices for pleasure that throw their life out of balance.

Mercury in Gemini

People with Mercury in Gemini love to talk, text, e-mail, and talk some more. They are master communicators and would make great salespeople because not only are they talkative, but they can talk to any kind of person. They just need to remember to listen in addition to talking.

The Moon in Cancer

Those with a Cancer Moon feel deeply. This placement is all about emotion and intuition. Those who have this may be so intuitive that they seem to be psychic. However, they can get stuck in their head and forget about other people. They may become so wrapped up in their emotional experience that they push others away.

The Sun in Leo

When someone has the Sun in Leo, they shine brightly. They are comfortable in leadership positions and have no problem taking the spotlight. In fact, they relish it. However, they have to be careful to allow others to have their time in the sun as well.

Mercury in Virgo

While Mercury in Gemini highlights the planet’s communicative qualities, Mercury in Virgo highlights the planet’s analytical qualities. Those with this placement may love spreadsheets. They make great researchers or any profession that requires great attention to detail. However, they can lose the forest for the trees.

Venus in Libra

Venus in Libra people are all about partnership and beauty. They want to find love and can find beauty in every situation. They have a particular way of using their words to turn every negative into a positive. However, they can get stuck in a dreamland. Because of their strong desires for a relationship, they may ignore red flags in potential partners.

Pluto in Scorpio

Pluto’s domicile is Scorpio. There won’t be another Pluto in Scorpio generation for over 200 years!

The Pluto in Scorpio generation was born between 1983 and 1995. This is also the general timeframe of the millennial generation. This generation is skeptical of authority and societal power structures. During their young adulthood, Scorpionic media like true crime rose in popularity. They also came of age in an era of sexual transformation due to HIV/AIDS.

Jupiter in Sagittarius

Jupiter in Sagittarius people may simply seem lucky. However, it’s hard to say if the planet actually brings people luck, or if it is more about the outlook of a Jupiter in Sagittarius person. They are very optimistic, so even when bad things happen, they don’t stress about it. They may see it as the way things were meant to be and not even register it as a blip on the radar. However, they have a hard time understanding others who are not as easygoing as they are.

Saturn in Capricorn

People with Saturn in Capricorn are generally pretty serious. They love structure and discipline. They are great at getting things done but in a different way than Mars in Aries. They persevere and see ways through challenges. They are not likely to let a difficult project go until it is fully complete. However, they also have a lot of fears. They can get wrapped up in these fears and cause themselves and others around them pain.

Uranus in Aquarius

Uranus was in its domicile, Aquarius, from 1995-2003. Those born during this time are true innovators and disrupters. This generation was the first one to grow up fully with the internet in their lives. Technology has always been a huge part of their existence and now they are using it for humanitarian causes.

Neptune in Pisces

Neptune in Pisces is when the planet is in domicile.

Neptune is currently in Pisces and has been since 2011. It will be there until 2026. While many of these Neptune in Pisces people are quite young, astrologers predict this will be a spiritual and empathetic bunch. They may break down barriers that we have between ourselves. However, they may also be prone to falling for illusions.
