In today’s world, not everyone has enough free time and extra resources to dedicate to owning a dog or a cat. Because of this, many people are turning to alternatives such as reptiles, birds, or even insects. However, one of the most wonderful, underrated pets of all is the humble and adorable hermit crab. These animals are praised for a variety of qualities such as their affordability, low maintenance, and sweet and goofy personalities. Although owning a hermit crab is still a responsibility, they are quite easy to care for and support compared to other animals. Let’s explore how much hermit crabs cost in 2024 and discuss other expenses associated with care and maintenance.

Among all the pets you can purchase today, hermit crabs are some of the most affordable of all. In fact, many pet stores price these animals for as little as $10 each. However, it is important to note that hermit crabs prefer the company of others. According to the Seattle Aquarium, “Contrary to their name, hermit crabs aren’t solitary creatures. In the wild, they’re found in groups of 100 or more.” Although it might seem appealing to buy just one to keep costs low, hermit crabs thrive in social settings. Try to buy hermit crabs in pairs at the very least, but three or more is even better.

How Much Are Supplies for a Hermit Crab?

Even though purchasing a hermit crab itself might be inexpensive, the supplies needed for these animals can get a bit pricy. While some people think that hermit crabs will be happy in small, cramped enclosures, the truth is that these animals need room to spread out. It is recommended to provide each hermit crab you own with at least 10 to 15 gallons’ worth of space. For example, three hermit crabs living in one environment should have a tank that is at least 45 gallons. More space is always better, and if you have enough room in your home for a 50 to 70-gallon tank, that would be much more ideal.

A 60-gallon tank will cost prospective owners somewhere between $100 and $200 on average. However, many people choose to secondhand shop for these enclosures, which can be much more affordable. In addition to the tank itself, hermit crabs will need sand and furniture for their enclosure. Places to hide such as driftwood or coconut shells are hermit crab staples. In addition, a small pool of water should be present and several larger hermit crab shells should be scattered throughout the tank. As your hermit crab grows, they may want to move into a larger shell. It’s important to give them options! These accessories can cost anywhere from $50 to $100.

Feeding a hermit crab is very affordable and easy. Many pet stores sell hermit crab food in the form of pellets or flakes, which gives these animals all the nutrition they need. You can pick up a bottle of their food for as little as $6. However, hermit crabs also enjoy partaking in food outside of their standard diet as well. You can incorporate other foods such as chicken, carrots, seaweed, coconut, and oats if you feel so inclined. While these additions aren’t a necessary part of their diet, giving your hermit crabs a treat every so often can be fun.

How Much Does It Cost to Treat a Hermit Crab Medically?

Unlike animals like dogs, cats, or rabbits, it may be more difficult to determine when your hermit crab isn’t feeling well. One telltale sign that something is amiss is lack of activity. These animals like to spend much of their time exploring their enclosures and socializing with their friends. If you notice a sudden change in their energy level, this may be cause for concern. In addition, if your hermit crab begins hiding or digging itself into the sand, or if your hermit crab abandons its shell for a long period of time without entering another, this may also be an indicator that something is wrong.

There are some at-home methods owners can use to help treat a sick hermit crab. Place your crab in a tank on its own in order to prevent your other crabs from contracting the illness. From there, owners can add a few different shells into the tank, provide them with food and water, and keep the tank in a warm, quiet place. The additional tank, shells, and accessories will cost around $100. Outside of this, there really isn’t too much that can be done. Unfortunately, there aren’t many treatments available for these animals at many veterinary practices. If you are lucky enough to find a vet who might be able to help, a consultation will likely cost around $65.

Final Thoughts

While some people don’t understand the hype behind these pets, others know just how rewarding owning a hermit crab can be. In total, prospective owners should put aside roughly $300 to pay for the initial supplies needed. After this, many owners will only have to pay about $20 per month for cleaning supplies, food, and shells. In essence, hermit crabs are low-cost, near-effortless pets with adorable personalities. You’re sure to fall in love after you bring them home!
