The United States Forest Service claims there are over 1,000 miles of hiking trails around Mount Hood and in the Mt. Hood National Forest. We’re going to focus on the summit hike. This particular hike sees about 10,000 climbers a year. If you want smaller crowds, hike in the middle of the week. This is a complex and technical hike/climb. You should plan well ahead and consider hiring a trail guide.

The primary access point for this climb is the Salmon River lot at the Timberline ski area. You need a permit to park here from November 1st to April 30th. Also required is a wilderness permit and a climbing permit for the area. You are only required to get a climbing permit if you intend on climbing to the summit – or any elevation above 9,500 feet.

This a difficult trail. AllTrails lists it as a 6.7-mile out-and-back trail. It has an elevation gain of 5,308 feet. Make sure you have all of the proper gear, including snow protection. You must leave your dogs at home.

Fire Dangers

Oregon is a high-burn state, with an extensive wildfire season. You should always check the weather and wildfire information while planning your hikes. For up-to-date information on wildfires and road closures around Mount Hood, check the Wildfire Restrictions and Management section for Mount Hood on the USDA website.
