If you have a dog, you know how important it is to keep it safe and contained in your property — unless on a leash. While some dogs are likely to stay close to their owners, many have tendencies to run. This can be dangerous for several reasons, from potential accidents to lost pups. Thankfully, the invention of the electric dog fence has helped alleviate such issues — and for a cost that won’t break the bank.

If you’re wondering how much you’ll pay for an electric dog fence, here’s a breakdown of installation costs by yard size and more.

Average Cost of Electric Dog Fences and Installation

The average electric dog fence cost is between $1,000 and $2,000. Of course, the total amount depends on various factors, such as the type of fence, the brand you purchase from, and the amount of fence needed for your yard. Additionally, some companies charge a flat fee while others offer a do-it-yourself (DIY) option, which can save you a chunk of cash.

On average, installation costs between $2 to $13 per linear foot — a wide range that can change based on different elements. For example, depending on the size of your yard, the total price might end up being more or less than the average.

The average cost factors in details like material/equipment, delivery/transportation, as well as time spent in preparation, setup, and cleanup. For example, if you need shrub or tree removal to make room for the fence, you will have to pay more for that work. However, you can take matters into your own hands for some of the installation.

Specifically, labor often makes up a large portion (sometimes over 50%) of the total cost. This means you can save money by installing the fence on your own. However, keep in mind that electric fence installation isn’t as simple as traditional fence installation.

Key Considerations for Dog Fences

Many factors impact the cost of electric fence installation. Here are a few details that might increase or decrease the price of your dog fence.

Type of Fence

There are two main types of electric fences: wireless invisible fences and in-ground wired fences. The wireless fence operates off satellite data or wireless systems that create safe zones for your dog to stay in. If the dog ventures outside of those zones, it will receive either a sound or static correction.

In-ground wired fences are installed underground and involve a radio transmitter and dog collar, which sends mild electric shocks to your pup if he steps over the wire. Keep in mind these “shocks” are not painful for the pup, and most dogs will heed the fence’s warning before going far enough to feel the electric impulse. This type of dog fence tends to be the more expensive option. However, experts say it is also a more reliable one on the market.

Fence Brand

Oftentimes, the brand of dog fence will greatly impact its price range. For example, some brands provide more specialized fences with unique features that inevitably raise the price. On the other hand, other companies might offer discounts or DIY installation with the proper tools included. Just be sure not to sacrifice quality for a better price.

Yard and Fence Size

If your yard is especially large, fence prices will be higher, as most experts charge installation by linear foot. Similarly, the size of the fence itself will play a major role in factoring costs. The larger the yard and the larger the fence, the more expensive the installation.

Budget-Friendly Options for Dog Fences

If you don’t have the budget for one of the more expensive electric dog fences on the market, you can make do with a cheaper alternative, as it will still get the job done. Additionally, if you can’t afford to cover your entire yard, you can choose to fence in a smaller portion of it, which can save you hundreds of dollars — if not more.

If you’re strapped for money, you can also install the fence yourself, as mentioned above. While it’s better to have an expert’s help — especially with invisible dog fence installation — you can likely do it on your terms without much hassle. However, you’ll want to ensure you have the proper equipment/tools and knowledge to ensure a correct setup. Additionally, especially in the case of wireless electric fences, you must prepare to dig a trench and run the wire through the ground.
