When we think of a predator hunting for food it’s easy to imagine a tremendous chase and a vicious takedown. However, sometimes the art of hunting isn’t in the violence, it is in the silence. Let’s see just how close this fox was able to get to this possum in the video below.

Fox Hunting for Food in Town

The short Instagram Reel shown just above takes us to the town where this fox is hunting for something a tad bit different. The Angry Animals3 Instagram page was able to release this footage sent to them by a passerby. This channel shares intense videos of angry animals fighting, eating, and hunting.

Possum Mother Gets Baby Stolen

As the video begins, we see a mother possum has her baby on her back, and they are trying to cross this road. Little did the mother know that her baby was being hunted by a fox. He slyly gets as close as possible and with one bite, is able to grab the baby off the mother.

The mother possum quickly turns around and faces the fox. At first, it looks as though this mother intends to put up a fight. However, she shocks us all by slowly trotting off without so much as a peep.

Do Animal Mothers Always Protect Their Young?

Often called simply a 'possum, the Virginia Opossum is the only marsupial found north of Mexico.

Possums can run up to 15 miles per hour.

An Instagram follower, inquisitive, asked in the video above, “Why did the possum mamma just stand still?” This is a very common question, as it seems out of nature for a mother to be willing to depart from her young without even so much as a fight. However, in the wild, sometimes survival is the only thing that matters. It’s not that this possum didn’t love her baby, it’s that she knew she was no match to fight this predator.

Not only do animals sometimes have to decide between themselves and their baby, but they are even forced at times to choose between two of their babies.

According to Live Science, “Many animal mothers also face the tough decision of having to choose between their offspring, nurturing one and neglecting another, so that the fittest — and the mother herself — will have a better chance at survival.”  And in the case of the video above, this mother knew that she had to leave to survive.

However, some animals will fight to the death for their babies. Take the elephant, for instance, which is a fierce protector over her babies. Not only does the mom protect her young, but the other members of the family that she resides in will protect the young calf, too.
