Walking through the aisles at any major supermarket, it feels like you have tons of options. Every item you could wish for comes in different brands, from cereal to lipstick. Did you realize, though, that just a few companies own many of those brands?

There’s something called ‘the illusion of choice’, and it’s something that shoppers face each day. When you enter a supermarket and browse all of the items on the shelves, you may not realize that nearly every single item you see is owned by the same few corporations. We’re about to delve into the six companies that own everything you may buy at a grocery store, who they are, and every brand that they have.

Nestlé

One of the front-runners of the food and beverage industry is Nestlé. Want a coffee? What about cat food, pizza, or vitamins? Or maybe some baby food, formula, or a chocolate bar? There’s a pretty good chance that Nestlé owns it.

According to their website, Nestlé owns the following brands: Alpo, Bakers, Beggin’, Beneful, Beyond, Boost, Busy Bone, Carnation, Cat Chow, Cerelac, Cheerios, Coffee Mate, Compleat, Corn Flakes, Dentalife, DiGiorno, Dog Chow, Drumstick, Essentia, Fancy Feast, Felix, Fitness, Friskies, Garden Gourmet, Garden of Life, Gerber, Gourmet, Haagen-Dazs (U.S. Only), Hot Pockets, KitKat, Koko Krunch, La Lechera, Lean Cuisine, Levissima, Life Cuisine, Lily’s Kitchen, Lion Cereals, Merrick, Milkybar, Nature’s Bounty, Nescafé, Nespresso, Nesquik, Nestlé Pure Life, Perrier, Purina, Quality Street, S.Pellegrino, Shredded Wheat, Smarties, Starbucks Coffee At Home, Stouffer’s, Thomy, Tidy Cats, Toll House, Vitaflo, Vital Proteins, and many more.

PepsiCo

Right next to Nestlé in the food and beverage (and anything, really) industry is PepsiCo, a company that owns more than 500 brands. While it’s not a surprise that PepsiCo owns Lay’s and Pepsi, you may not know that they own TAZO, a tea brand, or Rold Gold, a pretzel brand.

PepsiCo owns the following brands: Aquafina, Bare, Brisk, Bubly, Cap’N Crunch, Cheetos, Doritos, Evolve, Funyuns, Gatorade, Lay’s, LIFEWTR, Lipton, Mountain Dew, Munchies, Muscle Milk, Nut Harvest, Ocean Spray, Off The Eaten Path, Pasta Roni, Pepsi, Propel, Quaker, Rockstar, Rold Gold, Ruffles, Smartfood, SodaStream, Starry, SunChips, Tazo, and many, many more.

General Mills

When you think of General Mills, your mind probably goes straight to Cheerios. But you may not realize that Annie’s, which is marketed as ‘organic, all-natural food’ is made by the same corporation. Or, that General Mills is behind Blue Buffalo. That means your shopping cart full of dog food, cereal, and mac ‘n cheese is all supporting the same business.

General Mills currently owns 46 brands, according to their website: Annie’s, Autumn’s Gold, Betty Crocker, Bisquick, Blue Buffalo, Bugles, Cascadian Farm, Cheerios, Chex Cereal, Chex Mix, Cinnamon Toast Crunch, Cocoa Puffs, Cookie Crisp, Dunkaroos, EPIC, Fiber One, Gardetto’s, Gold Medal, Golden Grahams, Good Measure, Green Giant, Haagen-Dazs (Outside the U.S.), Jus-Rol, Kix, Larabar, Latina Fresh, Liberte, Lucky Charms, Monster Cereals, Muir Glen, Nature Valley, Old El Paso, Oui, Pillsbury, Pillsbury Atta, Progresso, Raisin Nut Bran, Ratio Food, Reese’s Puffs, Total, Totino’s/Jeno’s, Trix, Wanchai Ferry, Wheaties, Yoki, and Yoplait.

The Coca-Cola Company

There’s no question that Coca-Cola has carved out a large sliver of the soft drink industry. But what else does The Coca-Cola Company own? Since it’s marketed as a natural, healthy option, you may not realize that they also own Simply — a brand focused on making fruit juices, smoothies, and other healthy drinks. Does that surprise you?

According to their website, The Coca-Cola Company owns the following brands: Ades, Appletiser, Aquarius, Ayataka, Barq’s, BodyArmor, Ciel, Coca-Cola, Costa Coffee, Dasani, Del Valle, Diet Coke, Dogadan, Fairlife, Fanta, Fresca, Fresca Mixed, FuzeTea, Georgia, Gold Peak Tea, I-Lohas, Innocent, Jack Daniel’s, Lemon-Dou, Minute Maid, Peace Tea, Powerade, Schweppes, Simply, Simply Spiked, Smartwater, Sprite, Topo Chico, Topo Chico Hard Seltzer, and Vitaminwater.

Kraft Heinz

The Kraft Heinz Company has everything from dipping sauces to cream cheese and coffee. It owns brands that are usually considered unhealthy, like Kool-Aid and Cool Whip, which contain quite a few questionable ingredients. However, Kraft Heinz also owns Primal Kitchen, a natural brand marketed to those who live a more wellness-oriented lifestyle. How can one company own so many different brands with such different missions? It’s interesting, to say the least.

In the U.S., they own the following brands: A.1., Back to Nature Meals, Bagel Bites, Bakers Chocolate, Benihana, Capri Sun, Classico, Claussen, Cool Whip, Country Time, Crystal Light Delimex, Gevalia, Grey Poupon, Heinz 57 Sauce, Heinz Chili Sauce, Heinz Cocktail Sauce, Heinz Gravy, Heinz Ketchup, Heinz Seed, Heinz Vinegar, Jell-O, Jet-Puffed, Just Crack an Egg, Kool-Aid, Kraft Barbeque Sauce, Kraft Foodservice, Kraft Heinz Ingredients, Kraft Mac and Cheese, Kraft Natural Cheese, Kraft Salad Dressing, Kraft Singles, Lea & Perrins, Lunchables, Maxwell House, Mio, Miracle Whip, Mr. Yoshida’s, My Heinz, Nancy’s, Ore-Ida, Oscar Mayer, Philadelphia, Primal Kitchen, Shake N Bake, Stove Top, Sure-Jell, Taco Bell, Tassimo, TGI Fridays, Velveeta, Smart Ones, and Wyler’s.

Proctor and Gamble

It’s not just the food and beverage industry that is overrun by a few single companies. Household products and the laundry industry face the same monopolies. You may think that Luv’s, Pampers, and Bounty are different brands, but they’re all owned by the same parent company. That begs the question, is it really your choice if all of the options you have are owned by the same brand?

In fact, P&G owns nearly all of the major brands in baby care, laundry, paper products, home care, and more. The large corporation owns Luv’s, Pampers, Bounce, Downy, Gain, Tide, Bounty, Charmin, Always, Tampax, Braun, Gillette, Venus, Head & Shoulders, Old Spice, Pantene, Dawn, Febreze, Swiffer, Crest, Pepto Bismol, Meta Mucil, Clearblue, Vicks, ZzzQuil, Olay, and many more.
