The ocean is a powerful and beautiful force of nature. Awe-inspiring and vast beyond belief, the ocean holds deep spiritual symbolism and significance. In fact, many people have a natural pull or connection to the ocean, feeling calm and at home in its presence.

Making up 71% of Earth’s surface, the ocean contains 37 out of 50 critical minerals, influences Earth’s climate, generates oxygen, and provides necessary food sources. Additionally, an estimated 97% of Earth’s water is found in the ocean. Still, over 80% of the ocean remains explored. When looking at or even thinking about the ocean, it’s hard not to feel a sense of deep wonder. What does the ocean symbolize, and why is it such a significant resource for us?

This article will cover the spiritual symbolism and significance of the ocean across various cultures and religions.

Ocean Symbolism

The ocean is a significant symbol of mystery, wisdom, and unity. Below are some of the most common interpretations and symbolism of the ocean — as well as any associated myths and stories.

Native American Culture

Water as a whole is considered sacred to many Native American cultures. In fact, various individuals and tribes believe that water represents the origin of life, symbolizing fertility as well as healing. That being said, Native Americans felt a deep connection to the ocean (and all nature, really).

Christianity

There are many ocean references throughout the Bible. Some Christians believe the ocean symbolizes “peoples, multitudes, nations, and tongues” (Revelation 17:15), while others believe it symbolizes evil and death. Because the ocean is a powerful force of nature, it holds various positive and negative associations, from peace to chaos and love to rage.

Hindu Scripture

According to Hindu scripture, literature, and mythology, the ocean symbolizes life, deities, consciousness, and wholeness. In fact, one such verse states:

“BG 2.70 – Like how the ocean without getting overflowed remains unchanged [even] when water enters; Similarly those [persons] in whom desires enter from everywhere — attain bliss; Not the one who desires subjects.”

Bhagavad Gita

This verse presents the idea that we are already whole, and we do not need any external sources to make us complete. The ocean is a vast and unchanging force of nature.

Additionally, in Hindu mythology, Varuna was considered the god of the ocean, sky, and water. He holds great power over nature and offers protection to his people.

Greek Mythology

In Greek mythology, the ocean represented eternal life. Literally speaking, the ocean supports human life through its natural resources.

Additionally, Poseidon was the god of water and the sea, storms, earthquakes, and horses in Greek mythology. He was also considered the protector of all waters. In ancient myths and legends, Poseidon is said to have helped guide sailors along their routes, keeping them from danger.

Spiritual Meaning of the Ocean

The ocean holds various spiritual meanings and associations. Here are some of the most common ocean symbolisms — and what they might represent for you.

1. Power

The ocean is a powerful, massive body of salt water that covers more than 70% of Earth’s surface. In fact, the ocean’s waves and currents are some of the most powerful natural forces on the planet. The ocean has the ability to cause natural disasters like hurricanes, tsunamis, and deadly shipwrecks. This is a true testament to Mother Nature’s strength and influence.

As a result, the ocean spiritually symbolizes natural power. We all have power within us, and we all can tap into it. We’re all influenced — like the ocean — by our environment and climate. Oftentimes, we forget (or neglect) our innate power. Standing by the ocean can remind us just how much strength, resilience, and impact we have on the world.

2. Calmness

While the ocean is both powerful and chaotic at times, it can also manage to be calm, especially when the weather is mild. Many individuals find solace in the ocean, feeling a sense of peace when standing on the beach or walking the coastline. In fact, even just the smell of the ocean or the sound of its waves can elicit calmness. Some will even listen to soundscapes of the ocean to help them fall asleep.

Additionally, swimming in the ocean (or even just standing/walking along it) can be a grounding practice that helps regulate your emotional state. This is a great way to connect with nature and feel more relaxed.

3. Mystery

The ocean is arguably one of the most mysterious parts of nature. As noted earlier, over 80% of the ocean has yet to be mapped or explored by humans. Imagine all the secrets and wisdom we could reap if we were able to fully investigate the ocean in its entirety. Much of life remains a mystery, but the ocean reminds us to appreciate even those things we cannot understand.

The ocean prompts us to consider that we don’t have all the answers. It serves as a reminder to remain humble and open to new perspectives, opinions, thoughts, and ideas. There is much we can learn from one another if we neglect the idea that we’re right and every opposing opinion is wrong.

4. Subconscious Mind

The average depth of the ocean is around 3,688 meters (12,100 feet), with the deepest part (Challenger Deep) being around 10,935 meters (35,876 feet) deep. The ocean resembles just how deep our own subconscious mind can be. Often, like the ocean, many parts of our subconscious go unexplored. Yet, the subconscious mind is the part of our brain that drives our emotions, behaviors, thoughts, and habits.

The ocean reminds us that there is always more than meets the eye. Thankfully, it’s easier to explore the depths of our minds than it is to explore the depths of the ocean. Take time to reflect on what stirs up chaos and what brings you peace.

5. Emotions

The ocean is a great representation of our emotions. Sometimes, the ocean is calm and steady; other times, it’s chaotic and full of rage. This can depend on a variety of factors, such as the wind, temperature, and storms.

Just like the ocean waves, our emotions ebb and flow throughout the day. We, too, are influenced by our environments. The ocean reminds us that it’s okay (and even beautiful) to embrace our emotions as they surface. No emotion is wrong or bad — they just simply are. What matters is how we process and work through them.

6. Stability

While the ocean undergoes many changes and is greatly impacted by the Moon, gravity, and weather patterns, it remains a stable force of nature. We rely on the ocean for oxygen, food, and energy, among many other important resources. Even though ocean waters might not appear stable, the ocean itself has been a reliable and consistent resource for us.

The ocean reminds us of our own stability throughout life. Even though we might grow and change and even fall apart during hard times, we remain steady, stable, and resilient forces of nature. Our power and impact is unwavering.

7. Chaos

While a great symbol of both peace and stability, the ocean is also a spiritual representation of chaos. The ocean water can become unruly and even destructive at times — especially during severe storms. Its massive waves and strong currents can be unpredictable, giving the ocean an eerie and even sinister feel.

Chaos, however, is simply a part of life. Sometimes, we go through periods of uncertainty and upheaval that teach us how to “navigate rough seas,” so to speak. The ocean reminds us that everything in life ebbs, flows, and even rages. Thankfully, we have the strength to endure it all.

8. Wisdom

With its unchartered waters and awe-inspiring vastness, the ocean symbolizes deep wisdom and even spiritual enlightenment. There’s always more to learn about the ocean, just as there’s more to learn about ourselves, others, the world, and the universe as a whole. We never stop learning in life.

Additionally, many people even consider the ocean to be a symbol of collective consciousness and divinity. We can all tap into this innate wisdom and continue to teach each other the various meanings of life and love. The ocean reminds us to consider different perspectives and remain open-minded.

9. Unity

The ocean covers 71% of Earth’s surface, separating different continents yet forming a union between all nations of the world. As noted above, the ocean is sometimes considered to hold various unexpressed thoughts and ideas. It’s seen as a universal symbol of consciousness that unites different points of view and walks of life, as well as shared and harmonious experiences.

This reminds us that we are all connected. Even when we feel isolated or misunderstood, we might believe our souls are all part of a higher collective energy — just like the ocean represents. Together, despite our differences, we all share commonalities in a spiritual sense. It’s our humanness, egos, and unique experiences that might draw a wedge between us; but at the core, our souls are quite similar.

10. Freedom

The ocean is nothing if not free. It doesn’t wait for permission to crash into the shore or glisten in the sun. It simply exists as is, showing us just how beautiful nature can be. We are all connected to the ocean and nature as a whole, and we, too, are free — at least in mind and spirit. The ocean is a great symbol of freedom, reminding us that we can form our own thoughts and opinions and pave our own paths.

Freedom goes beyond possessing the right to act, speak, and think independently. On a spiritual level, it reminds us of our individuality and the unique purpose we each have in this world. It refers to our inner state of mind and consciousness, as well as what we choose to do with that spiritual awareness.

Significance of the Ocean

Without the ocean, human life would not be able to survive. The ocean helps regulate our climate, generates our oxygen, and provides food. It also supports international shipping, which is an integral part of our economy. It’s no shock, then, that the ocean plays a significant role on Earth. With its powerful symbolism and spiritual nature, the ocean can certainly teach us all a thing or two about life.
