There’s a reason why golden retrievers are such popular pets! As the clip below shows, they are full of fun and are always up for a game. That’s true even if they are in the sea and their playmate is a dolphin. Scroll down to see these two animals from entirely different species have great fun together!
Why Do Golden Retrievers Make Such Good Pets?
Golden retrievers originate from the Highlands of Scotland but are now popular pets all over the world. They were first bred by crossing a yellow retriever with a breed of water spaniel and with a little bit of bloodhound and Irish setter in the mix! The plan was to develop a superior hunting dog that would retrieve the game during shoots. The breeder wanted a dog who would be happy running on land and entering the water.
The resulting breed was also a wonderful family dog who usually gets on with adults, kids, and other animals. Golden retrievers are now one of the most popular pet dog breeds on the planet.
What Do You Need to Know Before Getting a Golden Retriever?
Golden retrievers need a lot of entertainment! They are energetic dogs who do not like to lie around all day. If your lifestyle cannot provide you with daily exercise, you need to be in a position to get somebody else to do that for you! A restless Golden Retriever and a small apartment are not a great combination. Â
This breed also sheds – a lot! Whilst the most severe shedding seasons are indeed in the spring and in the fall, they shed to a certain extent all the time. You need to be prepared to be vacuuming and brushing sofas, chairs, and the floor every day. As is the case with all breeds, there are some health conditions that they can suffer from. In particular, they can develop hip dysplasia which is a painful condition of the pelvis.
Why Do Dolphins Play?
It may look like pointless fun to you, but play is an important part of being a dolphin. Young dolphins practice their locomotor skills during play. It also allows them to develop their social skills and this is important when you live in social groups as this species does. When dolphins play they are also developing their brains. It is usually the young dolphins that indulge in play rather than the older animals. However, as the dolphin gets older the complexity of the play increases. It’s a bonus when they find a golden retriever to play with!
