See a Male Jacana Bird Tuck His Chicks Under His Wings And Run From Crocodile Closing In

When we often hear of the protection of the young in the wild, we often envision the mother as the protector. However, in the case of the jacana birds, it is the father who takes care of the young. 

Jacana Bird Sighting 

This next YouTube video posted at the bottom of this blog post gives us the sighting of a jacana bird protecting its young. This YouTube video was uploaded by the Nature on PBS page. This channel is dedicated to offering videos of nature through television. They share their passion for their mission below.

Nature on PBS also shares that the series that they have done received 10 Emmy awards and three Peabody awards! 

The video they shared on the Jacana dad rescuing his young has received more than six million views! They share their short description of how this father protected his chicks. “This devoted father saves his chicks by tucking one under each wing.”

Dad’s Protection

There are eight species of jacana birds.

At the start of this video posted below, we see two small jacana birds that are walking across this pond. They are carefully stepping on his lily pad so as not to fall into the water accidentally. It is difficult to miss the large feet these little chicks have. The narrator explains that these young ones don’t understand the danger that lurks under those lily pads. 

And that danger is a massive crocodile that would for sure love a mid-morning snack with these little chicks. The father is close by, keeping an ever-watchful eye on his young. He knows the dangers that are there, and it’s not long before he notices this predator. 

We see the chicks come up to their dad, and he tucks them under his wings and carries them off to safety!

Jacana (Jacanidae) Facts

Jacana (Jacanidae) can be found in Africa, Asia, Central America, North America, and South America, to name a few. These birds can weigh anywhere from 6-12 inches in height and weigh anywhere from 1-9 ounces. 

These beautiful birds are brown, yellow, red, black, white, and green in appearance. These birds are omnivores that reside in wetlands. They will eat prey such as insects, snails, worms, crabs, fish, mollusks, and seeds,
