Are you a birder perfecting your bird-watching playlist? Or are you planning a bird-themed party and want the background music to be perfect? Maybe you just really want to remember that one song. You know, the one with the bird. Whatever your reason, check out the best songs about birds!
Songs About Birds Flying
One of the best songs in existence is Nina Simone’s “Feeling Good.” This jazzy contralto was a powerhouse in her time and still lives on through her music. She gave pure passion in everything she sang, and this song evokes strong emotion. “Feeling Good” is about liberation from oppression and the euphoria and peace that comes with standing firm in the face of adversity.
One of the most famous lines of the song goes like this:
“Birds flying high
You know how I feel
Sun in the sky
You know how I feel
Breeze driftin’ on by
You know how I feel
It’s a new dawn
It’s a new day
It’s a new life
For me
And I’m feeling good.”
Another contender for this category is Nelly Furtado’s “I’m Like a Bird.”
“I’m like a bird; I only fly away” may be one of the most-sung verses about a bird of all time. At least for those that grew up in the early 2000s.
Songs About Birds and Freedom
Birds have long been associated with freedom, whether relishing in it or dreaming and hoping for it.
One of my favorite bird songs about freedom was written by the Beatles. “Blackbird” was released on their 1968 album and was a response to the race riots in Little Rock, AR.
“Blackbird singing in the dead of night
Take these broken wings and learn to fly
All your life
You were only waiting for this moment to arise.”
Another contender is “Birds” by Coldplay. Chris Martin delivers a light falsetto in this romantic, slightly upbeat song, singing, “And we’ll be birds flying free.”
Funny Songs About Birds
If you’ve ever seen the episode of Family Guy when Peter rediscovers his favorite song, “Surfin’ Bird,” then you are probably well acquainted with its upbeat, almost obnoxious sound. But, there is no denying that this song by The Trashmen is catchy and easily gets stuck in your head, whether you want it to or not.
If you don’t remember the lyrics, allow me to help:
“A-well-a everybody’s heard about the bird!
Bird bird bird, b-bird’s the word
A-well-a bird bird bird, bird is the word
A-well-a bird bird bird, well-a bird is the word.”
But, my favorite funny bird song of all time is the Dumb and Dumber version of “Mockingbird” performed by Harry and Lloyd. The lyrics are hauntingly beautiful. Here is the video if you want to hear the best song ever.
“Mock…yea”
“Ing…yea”
“Bird…yea”
“Yea…yea”
Country Songs About Birds
Miranda Lambert’s song “bluebird” is about hope, resilience, and inner tranquility, which is exactly the feeling you get when listening to its lyrics.
“And if the whole wide world stops singing
And all the stars go dark
I’ll keep a light on in my soul
Keep a bluebird in my heart.”
Another queen of country, Martina Mcbride’s classic song, “A Broken Wing,” is about a woman whose spirit is broken by being in a toxic relationship, but she still picks herself up and carries on.
“And with a broken wing
She still sings
She keeps an eye on the sky
With a broken wing
She carries her dreams
Man, you ought to see her fly.”
Disney Songs About Birds
If you grew up listening to Julie Andrews sing as Mary Poppins, you probably know what song I’m talking about. “Feed the Birds (Tuppence a Bag)” was a magical-sounding lullaby, especially when sung in Andrew’s beautiful soprano. Her ability to put children to sleep is unmatched.
“Feed the birds, tuppence a bag
Tuppence, tuppence, tuppence a bag
Feed the birds”, that’s what she cries
While overhead, her birds fill the skies.”
Classical Songs About Birds
Vaughan William’s “The Lark Ascending” is one of the most breathtaking pieces of music. The violin solo inspires and moves many to tears. Britain’s landscape inspired the song, full of sunshine and larks fluttering to the heavens.
