The largest city in Delaware now is Wilmington. According to the United States Census Bureau, Wilmington has an estimated population of 71,569.

Wilmington is the county seat of New Castle County and is one of the major cities of the Delaware Valley metropolitan area or the Philadelphia area. It sits at the confluence of the Delaware and Christina rivers, southwest of Philly. Wilmington covers a total area of 17 square miles, of which 10.9 square miles is land. This city features beautiful neighborhoods and a downtown area filled with restored brownstones and high-rise buildings. Wilmington is the financial, commercial, and industrial center of Delaware.

Keeping with the current population trend, Wilmington will likely be the largest city in Delaware in 2050. According to World Population Review, Dover is declining at a rate of 0.47% annually, meaning it is unlikely to surpass Wilmington in the next 30 years.

Wilmington’s population has increased by 3.13% since the last census 2020 and is growing by about 1.03% each year. Delaware, as a whole, is one of the fastest-growing states in the country, with many people flocking to this large city. However, its growth is slowing due to an aging population. In more rural areas, deaths exceed births and newcomers. Meanwhile, births and new people moving to the area exceed deaths in Kent and New Castle counties.
