The idea of birthstones by the month goes back to about the fifth century when St. Jerome drew a connection between the gem-studded breastplate of Aaron in the Bible and the months of the year. He encouraged people to wear gems according to the month of their birth, which began the birthstone tradition as we know it today.

Although there are one to three gems for each month, we can do the same with the zodiac signs, like Virgo. Often considered a logical, grounded zodiac sign, Virgos are more than meets the eye. We found nine stunning Virgo birthstones that are sure to get these quiet, cautious people moving.

Let’s explore nine Virgo birthstones and discover their uses, properties, and meanings.

Virgo Zodiac Sign: A Quick Overview

Virgos usually love nature and find joy in spending time out in the wild or tending to their garden. Most are also animal lovers who are happiest accompanied by at least one pet.

Yet, these soft-hearted people are best known for obsessing over the little details. In true Virgo fashion, we tracked down the best birthstones for these quirky, down-to-earth people.

Blue Sapphire

Nearly as hard as diamonds, corundum doesn’t just come in blue — it can be pink, red (rubies!), and even clear.

Well-known as the main September birthstone, no Virgo gemstone list is complete without it. Although not all are born in September, most Virgos can benefit from its regal qualities.

Properties and Uses for Blue Sapphire

Virgos are traditionally ruled by Mercury and blue sapphire can help enhance communication — something Mercury also encourages.

Much like staring into a deep pool of blue water, blue sapphire can calm an anxious mind. The gem also symbolizes honesty, selflessness, kindness, and wisdom.

Virgos can use blue sapphire for mental clarity and focus. It can also stimulate the third eye and throat chakras. Blue Sapphire worn or in Virgo’s living areas can help improve inner calm and restore balance.

Green Jade

Jade comes in many colors ranging from almost white to various shades of green. It was the stone of royalty in ancient Chinese belief, and people still prize the stone.

Properties and Uses for Green Jade

This Virgo birthstone may be a surprise to some. However, green jade helps Virgos get outside their self-imposed boxes and bring life to ideas.

Green jade is versatile, calming, and symbolizes love. It encourages harmony between the body, mind, and soul — a welcome change to the internal conflict many Virgos experience. A green jade-wearing Virgo may feel freer to soul search.

The quartz variety varies from yellow or orange to greenish yellow or brownish yellow. The most prized citrine crystals are a lovely golden yellow-orange. It sometimes looks like topaz and works wonderfully as a topaz substitute. However, it’s somewhat rare and gem-quality stones are even more rare.

Properties and Uses for Citrine

Let the sunshine in on Virgo! Citrine’s intensity helps Virgo overcome some of their perfectionist tendencies — habits that sometimes keep them from making forward progress.

It brings light to dark corners where fears and pessimism often hide to chase away the shadows. Citrine has an active, optimistic energy just waiting to be released.

One of very few gemstones that only occurs in one color, even though it occurs in shades of greenish yellow, you’ll never find a purple peridot.

Peridot is transparent olivine that some call chrysolite. It’s not very common, and facet-quality gems are hard to find.

Properties and Uses for Peridot

Gentle greens common to peridot help earthy Virgos make quicker progress toward goals and overcome roadblocks.

Peridot’s energy is warm and friendly — like most Virgos. It’s a stress-relieving stone, perfect for anxious Virgos who need to relax and let go of some of their daily stress.

Garnet

Popular for thousands of years in jewelry, garnets are a group of silicate minerals — not just one species, like sapphire. They all look similar to the eye but have different chemical makeups.

Of over twenty garnet species, only about five offer gem-quality stones.

Properties and Uses for Garnet

In shades ranging from vibrant red to somewhat less vibrant brownish red, garnet taps into the heart. It is a bolstering stone that encourages confidence and courage — while it also edges cautious Virgos to action.

Garnet helps Virgos complete projects — giving them the energy and courage to finish strong.

Fluorite

Without the impurities that give it color, fluorite is just as colorless as plain glass. However, this mineral form of calcium fluoride often has purple and green shades in each crystal. It’s softer, so doesn’t handle faceting well, people often use it as a tumbled or raw stone in wire-wrap designs.

Properties and Uses for Fluorite

Fluorite’s energy lightens even the most serious Virgo’s mood because they sometimes get overwhelmed. Virgos habitually take on more than they can handle because they want to help everyone.

This stone is calming and can help organize thoughts when the craziness of modern life gets Virgo wound up.

Carnelian

This brownish-red chalcedony variety is typically brownish red to brownish orange. Carnelian is hard enough to use in wire-wrap applications or as cabochons, and tumbled stones are easily carried in pockets.

Properties and Uses for Carnelian

Carnelian can spice things up for contemplative Virgos. This stone is also called the Singer’s Stone because it loves putting on a show.

It’s a magnificent stone that helps Virgos Enhance their self-confidence and ignite the fire. Effectively getting quiet Virgos moving forward and out of imposter syndrome.

So named because the inclusions inside this colorful chalcedony look like mossy hills and forests. Well-cut and polished moss agate cabochons display beautiful contrasts between milky white skies and green trees and hills.

Properties and Uses for Moss Agate

Moss agate is one stone whose characteristics make a perfect Virgo birthstone. The serene landscapes formed by inclusions present in stones enhance focus and quiet the active Virgo mind. Perhaps its best use is for Virgos who get lost in the details and forget to look at the big picture.
