Cats are common beloved household pets. Known for their independence and strong boundaries, these cute yet bold creatures often form close bonds with their human caregivers. In fact, they’ll often go to large lengths to protect their people. This was demonstrated in a recent viral video of a cat who saved a boy from a dog attack in California.

In the video, which you can watch at the end of this article, a neighbor’s guard dog attacked a child from behind. The ambush was completely unprovoked, as the child was on his own driveway playing on his bike. The dog snuck up on him before pouncing, taking the kid by the ankle and beginning to drag him across the pavement.

Thankfully, it only took seconds for the family cat to save the day. Upon witnessing the attack, the little boy’s beloved pet cat sprinted toward the dog and jumped onto it, knocking it off the child. Before chasing it away, the cat looked back as if to check the child was okay. The dog immediately backed off and fled the scene.

While the boy needed stitches, reporters say he will be just fine — thanks to his hero of a pet coming to his defense.

Are Cats Protective of Their Owners?

While cats get a bad rep for being aloof and sassy, they can actually be quite affectionate and protective over their humans. Cats often form bonds with their human families and become defensive over them. This is especially true if they’re in danger or under attack (like in the video). This is especially true for babies or children, as cats see them as their own “people kittens.” In fact, cats can even sense illness in their human caregivers due to their strong sense of smell, often trying to alert their owners.

Can a Cat Beat a Dog in a Fight?

Yes, cats can beat dogs in a fight; however, it might depend on the size of both animals. For example, if a dog is much larger than a cat (or vice versa), it has an obvious advantage. Even so, just because a dog might be larger than a cat, it still doesn’t mean the dog will win. Generally speaking, cats are actually better fighters than dogs, as they pounce, swat, scratch, ambush, and even bite their predator. Think of cats like mini lions: they know how to win a fight.
