Can lizards be frisky? They sure can! And they use physics to show off just how frisky they can be. Watch the video at the bottom of the page to see what we mean. But first, learn a little bit more about the types of lizards that run in a way that makes you laugh. Most importantly, learn why they run like that!

What Type of Lizard Runs on Its Hind Legs?

There isn’t just one type of lizard that runs on its hind legs. Collared lizards, frilled lizards, and basilisk lizards all stand up and get to sprinting! Being that they have four legs — and four legs provide a speed advantage — researchers have wondered why some lizards choose a bipedal approach. Some scientists considered that it was an energy-saving method but even as they move, they do not advance nearly as well. After further research, scientists discovered that it’s not about having an advantage. It’s merely a consequence of acceleration and inertia. When the hind legs get going, the front legs get out of the way!

Reptile Shows in School

Although the video below may make you wonder why there’s a lizard running in an elementary school gym, these reptile shows serve a purpose. Like with sharks, the general public has a misconstrued understanding. When there isn’t an opportunity for education, myths are perpetuated. Reptile shows get children acquainted with reptiles in a fun, informative environment. Furry animals are revered yet scaly animals are often feared. These educational demonstrations pull the curtain back on reptiles, including lizards, allowing a child’s innate curiosity to thrive.

Reptile Takes Off Running Mid-Demonstration

When the video below starts, you can see several children sitting in a half circle, the reptile handler at the forefront kneeling with the lizard in hand. The subtitles read, “Dude was planning his escape for years.” The music that plays is the kind you hear at the start of an action scene. The handler places the lizard down and without a second thought, the lizard is off! One of the kiddos sitting in the half circle coils his body as the lizard runs right past him, displaying his adorable bipedal run. The handler quickly takes off in close pursuit. The video is only seven seconds long but it’s enough to get you giggling!
