Shengxiao, or the Chinese zodiac, is a system deeply rooted in Asian culture. It notoriously combines folklore with both astronomy and astrology. The zodiac is a significant part of Chinese heritage and has a strong influence on their traditions, beliefs, and social interactions. With origins dating back more than 2,000 years, its principles and teachings are now well-known throughout the world! For background, the Chinese Zodiac assigns an animal to each month in a repeating 12-year cycle. People born within each segment are said to take on their respective animal’s alleged attributes and characteristics. 2024 is the Year of the Dragon, but what does that mean exactly? Continue reading to discover the meaning of this year’s zodiac animal and explore the possible impacts it might have on the months to come!

The dragon symbol is one that is seen in cultures across the world. Though this mythical creature is seen as a negative force throughout Europe and the United States, it is viewed as an entirely positive figure across many Asian cultures!

The Chinese zodiac was first officially documented during the Han Dynasty, which ran from 206 to 9 A.D. While the original story of the zodiac’s creation varies, it is believed to be based on the results of a race. The Jade Emperor, ruler of the heavens, selected each animal to participate in the race, and the order in which they finished determined their position in the zodiac cycle. The animals included a rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, goat, monkey, rooster, dog, and pig. While this is true, the dragon, being a mythical creature, arrived after the other animals who competed for their spots. Because of this, the dragon became the fifth animal in the twelve-year zodiac cycle.

Why Does It Matter?

The above infographic addresses some of the most popular characteristics of those born within the Year of the Dragon.

The most recent births that fall under the year of the dragon include 2024, 2012, and 2000. Looking to the future, we can expect dragon births once every twelve years — so 2036, 2046, 2060, and so on. But why does it matter, and what significance does the year of the dragon hold?

In China and throughout many other Asian countries, it is believed that the characteristics of the zodiac animals can influence events, behaviors, and trends for that year. This also applies to people, as those born under each zodiac are thought to inherit that animal’s traits. Beyond that, zodiacs are also believed to predict people’s fortune and destiny.

Impact on People and the Year to Come

For example, people born during the year of the dragon are considered to be blessed with charisma, power, and good fortune. Moreover, it is often considered advantageous to be born under this sign, since it predicts great success. As a result, dragon people are widely thought to be made for business and politics. Additionally, they are said to be some of the best teachers. This might be in part due to their perceived skill in language, leadership, and authority. However, there may also be increased expectations placed on people born in the year of the dragon due to the high regard in which this sign is held.

Having said that, the influence of the dragon zodiac extends far beyond people. It is also believed that any year associated with this powerful creature foretells economic prosperity and impactful political changes. This makes the year of the dragon a highly anticipated and celebrated time. However, due to the fiery nature of dragons, it is advised to be extra cautious with candles, fireplaces, and any other potential fire sources throughout the year.

Different Kinds of Dragon Zodiacs

Beyond each segment being linked to a different animal, each year is also associated with one of the five elements. These elements include wood, fire, earth, metal, or water. For example, someone might be a “Wood Dragon” or a “Fire Dragon,” depending on the year they were born.

Just like each different animal in the zodiac calendar, each element has a unique impact on how the year (and all those born during it) will turn out. For example, 2024 is the year of the wood dragon. The wood element is commonly associated with growth, flexibility, and kindness. When combined with the dragon zodiac, it can create a person who is inherently empathetic, adaptable, and compassionate.

Furthermore, any year associated with the wood dragon is thought to bring forth new growth, enhanced creativity, and positive change. It can also mark a period of positive transformation or once-in-a-lifetime experiences. Interestingly, years associated with the wood element are also believed to have nurturing qualities. This can be expressed through positive environmental change, community building, and sustainable growth.
