#1 The Scarab’s Secret by Christina Balit

The best book about Egyptian mythology for kids is The Scarab’s Secret. An ancient Egyptian hero, the scarab beetle, called Khepri, is the narrator of this elegantly illustrated book. As the story unfolds along the Nile’s banks, a young pharaoh is seen scooping up the beetle. First, Pharaoh holds the sun in his hand and calls Khepri “the rising sun.” A second meeting occurs after Khepri accidentally rides in a basket of dried figs to the Pharaoh’s under-construction tomb.

As soon as Khepri discovers a trap set to kill the Pharaoh, he warns him. Readers without a historical background (provided in the endnote) may find this story difficult to comprehend. The book, however, has suspenseful spreads and great illustrations to keep the readers engaged. It is an excellent book for kids aged between four and eight.
