We often hear stories about the accomplishments (and exploits) of our presidents. But where did they get their start? We wanted to offer a glimpse into the more personal side of our U.S. presidents. So, below, we offer the birthplaces of each president. Kick back and get ready to learn some new history!

George Washington

The country’s first president also played an instrumental war in the Revolutionary War and the country’s establishment. George Washington was born in Westmoreland County, Virginia, on February 22, 1732.

John Adams

The 2nd president of the United States was born in Massachusetts.

John Adams was born on October 30, 1735, in Braintree, Massachusetts. He was the first Vice President of the United States before taking the highest office in the land in 1797. Braintree is a town in Eastern Massachusetts. It is in Norfolk County and sits on the Weymouth Fore River.

Thomas Jefferson

One of the signatories of the Declaration of Independence was also the 3rd president of the United States. He was born on April 13, 1743, on Shadwell Plantation in Albemarle County, Virginia.

James Madison

James Madison helped draft some of our founding documents.

The country’s fourth president was born on March 16, 1751, near Port Conway in Virginia. Port Conway is on the northern banks of the Rappahannock River in northern Virginia. James Madison was one of the key figures in drafting the Bill of Rights and the Constitution. He spent his life on plantations in Virginia, and in the 1760s, he moved into the famous Montpelier estate with his family.

James Monroe

Another Virginia resident, James Monroe, was born on April 28, 1758. Monroe was born at Monroe Hall in Westmoreland County. He was a veteran of the American Revolution and was the last of the founding fathers to serve as a United States president.

John Quincy Adams

John Quincy Adams was the son of John Adams. He was born at the family home in Braintree, Massachusetts, on July 11, 1767. This small municipality is roughly ten miles outside of Boston proper. However, he didn’t spend a lot of time at his home. John Quincy spent a lot of time with his father on diplomatic trips.

Andrew Jackson

One of the most famous American generals was Andrew Jackson. He also served as the 7th president of the United States. Jackson was born on March 15, 1767, in Waxhaws Region, South Carolina. That area is part of the Piedmont region, which spans both of the Carolinas.

Martin Van Buren

The 8th president of the United States, Martin Van Buren, was born on December 5, 1782 in Kinderhook, New York. While it was a smaller town when Van Buren was born, today, it is part of Columbia County and one of the most populous communities.

William Henry Harrison

America’s 9th president was born in Virginia.

William Henry Harrison was born on February 9, 1773, in Charles City County, Virginia. The former military officer died roughly one month into office. His birth county sits slightly southeast of Richmond.

John Tyler

The 10th president of the United States was John Tyler, born on March 29, 1790, in Charles City County, Virginia. He previously served as vice president before getting elected to the highest office in the land.

James K. Polk

James K. Polk was born on November 2, 1874, in Pineville, North Carolina. Under his presidency, the U.S. greatly expanded its territory after the Mexican-American War. His hometown sits between Fort Mill and Charlotte.

Zachary Taylor

Zachary Taylor was an accomplished general.

One of the shortest presidential terms on record was Zachary Taylor. He was born on November 24, 1784 in Orange County, Virginia. This former general was a war hero from the Mexican-American War and the War of 1812.

Millard Fillmore

The 13th president was born in New York.

Millard Fillmore only served three years in office. He was born on January 7, 1800 in Summerhill, New York. That small town now sits in Cayuga County.

Franklin Pierce

The 14th president of the United States of America was Franklin Pierce. He was born on November 23, 1804, in Hillsborough, New Hampshire, which is still a small town in Hillsborough County.

James Buchanan

James Buchanan

The 15th president served from 1857 to 1861.

James Buchanan was born on April 23, 1791, in Cove Gap, Pennsylvania. Today, it is an unincorporated community in Franklin County.

Abraham Lincoln

The man known for signing the Emancipation Proclamation was Abraham Lincoln, who was born on February 12, 1809, in Hodgenville, Kentucky. This now famous community sits in the valley of the North Fork of the Nolin River.

Andrew Johnson

Andrew Johnson was born on December 29, 1808, in Raleigh, North Carolina. He became president after his predecessor, Abraham Lincoln, was assassinated.

Ulysses S. Grant

One of the most well-known generals from the Civil War was Ulysses S. Grant. He was born on April 27, 1822, in Point Pleasant, Ohio. This community is less than 30 minutes southeast of Cincinnati.

Rutherford B. Hayes

Rutherford B. Hayes was born on October 4, 1822, in Delaware, Ohio. He grew up roughly thirty minutes north of Columbus.

James A. Garfield

The 20th United States president was James A. Garfield, born on November 19, 1831, in Moreland Hills, Ohio. This small community is in Cuyahoga County.

Chester A. Arthur

One of the relatively unknown presidents was Chester A. Arthur. He was born on October 5, 1829, in Fairfield, Vermont, which sits in Franklin County.

Grover Cleveland

Benjamin Harrison only served for a single term in the late 1800s. He was born on August 20, 1833 in North Bend, Ohio. This quaint spot is in Hamilton County, along the Ohio River.

William McKinley

The 25th president of the United States was William McKinley, born in Niles, Ohio, on January 29, 1843. Niles is near where the Mahoning River and Mosquito Creek merge.
