Texas heat has a way of ushering you toward Texas lakes where it feels a bit cooler and there’s plenty of fun to be had. Discover five absolutely amazing lake towns in Texas and learn what kinds of activities you can enjoy in each!

5 Amazing Lake Towns in Texas

1. Marble Falls

Incorporated in 1907, Marble Falls is located north of San Antonio. This lake town is situated right next to Lake Travis and provides opportunities for fishing, kayaking, jet skiing, and boating. There are local rental places where you can pick up equipment if you don’t take your own. You can enjoy hiking in the nearby state parks such as Pedernales Falls State Park and Inks Lake State Park. Plus, they offer swimming areas so you can take a dip.

This lake town is gorgeous, and there is plenty to do, including bird watching. For family-friendly fun, you can always visit “Sweet Berry Farm” in the spring. Here, you can pick your own strawberries and blackberries and, in the fall, cut your own flowers, and get your own pumpkins! There is even a Texas-shaped maze that only adds to the enjoyment.                                                                       

For golf enthusiasts, some of the most popular parks include Hidden Falls Golf Course and Delaware Springs Golf Course. For wine tasting with friends, there is the “Heart of Texas Wine Tour.” The wineries are Johnson City, Fredericksburg, and Dripping Springs.

2. Georgetown

This lake town is also known as the Red Poppy Capital of Texas. The downtown area is Georgetown Square, and it celebrates Victorian-era buildings. There are boutique shops, a variety of restaurants, and art galleries for you to peruse.

The town also serves to host community events like live music, a farmers’ market, and the most important festival of the year “The Red Poppy Festival. San Gabriel Park offers walking trails and sports fields, and Hole Park has a natural lagoon where you can swim.

Sun City is within the limits of Georgetown, and it is a large retirement area. It offers an active lifestyle environment for people over 55. Those who live here enjoy a strong community and friendly atmosphere, fitness centers, swimming pools, social clubs, and beautifully landscaped golf courses.

3. San Marcos

The lake town of San Marcos is situated between San Antonio and Austin. The city gets to enjoy the San Marcos River, which flows through it. This river is a popular spot for outdoor recreational activities such as canoeing, tubing, and kayaking. in addition to the river, there is Rio Vista Park, which offers trails and a playscape.

Spring Lake Natural Area (a 252-acre park) is completely undeveloped and one of the most breathtaking areas you could visit. There are six miles of trails here for you to explore. For a family activity, there’s Wonder World Park. It is an earthquake-formed cave. When you visit, you can go on one of the guided tours through the caverns. You can also enjoy a wildlife park and an observation tower.

4. Eagle Mountain

This lake town is also known as Eagle Mountain Lake. It’s in the western region of the state right where Oklahoma and Colorado meet. It’s a small town with a population of just over 4,000. The lake is in a beautiful landscape that spans approximately 8,700 acres. All the views are breathtaking and it’s an area open for recreational enjoyment. People from within Texas and other states flock to Eagle Mountain to enjoy the great outdoors in a fun-filled environment.

For your convenience, there are marinas that provide boat rentals, including power boats as well as supplies. You can participate in every water sports activity here, like wakeboarding and skiing. You can also go fishing! Some of the fish you can expect to catch include largemouth bass, white bass, catfish, and crappie.

5. Bonham

Bonham is a small lake town located in Fannin County. There is also Bonham State Park, which is just outside the city and has a 65-acre lake. Here, you can enjoy fishing, boating, and walking through natural hiking trails. If you fall in love and want to stay, you can camp there overnight! At Lake Bonham, you can enjoy 1,020 acres.

Choose between camping, heading out to the fishing dock, enjoying the public beach and playground, or taking out your boat. Just be sure to pick up a boating permit for your watercraft! If you go out fishing, some of the fish you can expect to find include crappie, channel and blue catfish, and largemouth bass.
