What’s the Weather Like in Orlando During August

Orlando weather varies by the day and sometimes even the minute. It can drastically change without a moment’s notice, especially in August. Average Temperature

August is a very warm month with daily temperatures consistently falling in the 90s, however, temperatures can drop into the 70s for a short time. The daily average low in Orlando, Florida during August is 76°F. Although it can drop more, it rarely falls below 73°F. While triple-digit weather is rare in this sunny state, it can easily feel like it with the city’s high humidity.

Humidity

Florida is a very humid state. It’s the second most humid state in the country, after Alaska. However, anyone who’s ever been to both states can agree that Florida’s humidity is on another level. According to Weather Spark, Orlando’s humidity in August frequently ranks as Muggy. The relative humidity averages around 77%. It’s important to note that humidity levels change throughout the day.

Rainfall and Storms

Despite the state’s nickname as the Sunshine State, Florida summers are hot, humid, and wet. For instance, Orlando receives about 4.9 to 9.3 inches of rainfall in August. It rains at least 24.6 days in the city, so pack a poncho or two for your next trip. Interestingly, storms are common in this summer month too. You’ll likely experience afternoon rain showers and thunderstorms, sometimes without the rain. Although tornados can form during August, they are more common in May and April.

Hurricanes

Florida is the state that gets hit the most by hurricanes, however, Orlando doesn’t get a lot of damage since it’s central. Still, the chances are higher compared to May or June. The Atlantic Hurricane Season runs from June 1st to November 20th. Florida has experienced many devastating hurricanes during August. For example, Hurricane Andrew hit the state in August of 1992 as a category 5. Another example is Hurricane Charley which affected Florida in August of 2004 as a category 4.

Is August the Best Time to Visit Orlando?

August is a hot, wet, and humid month, but it’s also one of the busiest months for tourism in Orlando. If you’re visiting during the summer, especially in August, you should keep an open mind as flight delays and cancellations aren’t uncommon. If you want warm weather and low crowds, the best time to visit Orlando is during spring, as long as you avoid spring break. March and May are great months for enjoying theme parks and the many things to do in the colorful city. If you’re visiting the City Beautiful during August, don’t forget to drink plenty of water and wear loose breathable clothes.

Things to do in Orlando During August

Orlando offers a lot of things to do for visitors. The main attractions in Orlando are the theme parks including Disney World, Universal Studios, and Sea World. Each of these parks has multiple themed parks you can spend days exploring. Water parks are also common and owned by all three! If you’re looking for something more natural, you can also visit the springs near Orlando, however, you’ll have to drive away from the high tourist spots. Wekiwa Springs and Rock Springs are close enough to Orlando for a quick day trip. For history buffs and museum lovers, there are many affordable museums in downtown Orlando, including the Orange County Regional History Center. Shopping is another popular activity, which you can do in the Florida Mall and the Orlando Outlets.

Tips and Tricks to Stay Cool in Orlando

Don’t ruin your Orlando vacation by suffering from heatstroke and other conditions because of the intense sun. Vacations are fun, but rest is just as important. Heat stroke rarely causes death, but is more dangerous for kids. One study observed 215 heat-related deaths in Orlando from 2010 to 2020.

To beat the heat and humidity, hydrate before going outside. Drink water long before you feel thirsty. This is especially important if you’re going to do a lot of walking in the sun. Also, wear a hat to protect your neck, face, and head. Sunburnt ears are uncomfortable, especially when sleeping. Although it’s tempting to wear cute clothes, ditch those leggings, tight pants, and black t-shirts for your trip. Instead, dress in light colors and breathable fabric. Tight clothes, like leggings, trap heat.

Hydration is key when hiking in the summer months.
