Yes, rabbits can eat bananas! Although they shouldn’t be a staple in their diet, bananas make a great treat for rabbits. Most of them love the sweet flavor.

Bananas contain many essential nutrients such as potassium, fiber, and vitamins C and B6. However, they’re high in sugar and starch, which is why moderation is recommended.

The best time to feed bananas to your rabbit is when the peels are still green or yellow in color. Over-ripe bananas contain more sugars and may cause stomach upset.

Rabbits can eat a maximum of one to two tablespoons of fruit every one to two days. So, if banana is the only fruit you’re feeding your rabbit in a day, they can have up to two tablespoons.

Smaller rabbits should be fed less than this, while large rabbits will fall toward the higher end of the spectrum. Also keep your rabbit’s health in mind, as those with diabetes or other health problems may not tolerate bananas well.

Remember that your rabbits’ primary diet should consist of unlimited fresh hay, a small amount of plain pellets, and daily fresh vegetables. Fruit is a treat!

Just like you wouldn’t feed your dog a whole bag of treats or feed a kid a whole carton of ice cream, your rabbit should never eat a whole banana. It’s far too much sugar for them.

Can Rabbits Eat Banana Peels?

Rabbits can technically eat banana peels, but the use of pesticides on bananas may make this unsafe. Because small amounts of pesticides can penetrate the peel and reach the fruit, there might be leftover pesticides on the banana peel even after washing.

If you do decide to feed your bunny banana peels, make sure it’s in small amounts. Just like the banana fruit, rabbits shouldn’t eat banana peels in large quantities.

You should also wash the peels thoroughly before serving.

Rabbits can eat banana leaves so long as they’re pesticide-free. Be sure to wash them thoroughly and feed them in moderation.

Banana leaves contain key nutrients such as potassium, calcium, and magnesium. They also contain a lot of fiber, which is great for bunnies!

Preparing Banana for Your Rabbit

Preparing banana for your rabbit is super easy! Simply peel the fruit and serve up to two tablespoons to your bun.

Use thin banana slices as a treat, mush it up for them, or serve a slice of banana with their daily veggies.

The leftover banana can be shared with other pets, or you can eat it yourself!

Don’t add anything extra to the banana, such as seasonings. Avoid baked goods and other foods that contain bananas, as these are almost always unhealthy for a rabbit.

Dried banana is okay so long as it doesn’t contain sugar or preservatives. Feeding frozen or cooked bananas isn’t typically recommended or necessary, and the bananas may have less nutritional value when served in these ways.

Why do Rabbits Love Bananas?

Rabbits love bananas because they’re sweet and sugary! Bananas and other fruits contain natural sugars that can make them almost addicting to bunnies.

This is why you’ll see recommendations to get a new bunny used to eating their vegetables first, so they don’t get too hooked on sugary foods like bananas.

What Fruits are Safe for Rabbits to Eat?

Rabbits can eat most fruit that humans do but in much smaller amounts. While fruit is an important dietary staple for humans, it’s a treat that rabbits should have very little of.

Some fruits you can feed your rabbit include:

  • Watermelon
  • Apple
  • Pear
  • Raspberry
  • Blueberry

And there are a lot more where those came from! Remember to introduce new foods slowly so that you don’t upset your rabbit’s tummy. Don’t feed all of the above fruits at once, but instead, space them out over weeks or months.

Every rabbit is different, so feed your rabbit a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables to find their favorites.

Which Fruits are Toxic to Rabbits?

Most fruits are completely rabbit-safe! However, avocado is toxic to rabbits as it contains persin.

In addition, grapes and raisins aren’t toxic but do contain too much sugar for rabbits.

Some other fruits have unsafe parts, such as seeds, pits, or skins that rabbits cannot eat. Generally, you’ll want to remove the seeds and pits from the fruit before serving. Examples of unsafe fruit seeds include apple seeds and cherry pits.
