Humans regularly eat the eggs of several animals, including fish, but can you eat a snake’s eggs? We know that many animals, such as raccoons, skunks, hawks, and even other snakes, eat snake eggs. In theory, you can eat snake’s eggs that have not been fertilized. They simply contain the protein-rich, nutritious liquid that would have sustained a snake embryo. However, as is the case with bird’s eggs, they could also contain pathogens that could make you ill or allergens that could trigger a reaction. Snake eggs must always be cooked before eating.

Where Are They Eaten?

In some cultures, snake egg recipes are popular. Traditional Vietnamese cuisine uses snake eggs harvested from inside the female’s body. They are ingredients in a popular breakfast dish and served with vegetables and rice or noodles. Often, they are consumed with other parts of the snake’s body. The eggs can be boiled or fried in the same way as a bird’s egg. They are also eaten in some parts of Thailand, Indonesia, China, and Japan. Check out the clip of some being cooked below.

What Do Snake Eggs Look Like Inside?

On the outside, snake eggs vary by species. Many are oblong, and most have a leathery shell. A snake egg has an inside that is thicker and more gelatinous than a bird’s egg. It looks a bit like a slimy custard!

Are Snake Eggs Poisonous?

Snake eggs are not poisonous, but they could make you ill. If you eat them without cooking them thoroughly, you could ingest a harmful pathogen. The same is true for the eggs of many birds, and even chicken eggs from unvaccinated hens can give you salmonella food poisoning.

Do They Contain Venom?

No, snake eggs will not contain venom, even if they are obtained from venomous snakes. Venom is produced in special glands close to the snake’s jaw so that it can be injected using the snake’s fangs. Humans would only eat an unfertilized egg, so there would not even be a baby snake inside.

Are Snake Eggs Eaten in the US?

Yes, a python hunter from Florida is taking advantage of the plentiful numbers of invasive Burmese pythons in her locality. She claims that it is perfectly safe to eat python eggs, provided they are cooked correctly. She uses python eggs to bake sugar cookies and eats hard-boiled python eggs with hot sauce!
