Can Dogs Get Overexcited?
Yes, dogs can get too excited and excitement should not be confused with happiness because they are not the same thing. Dogs who get over-excited often have other unwanted behaviors and this can be a problem. It’s a myth that these dogs need exercise because that can sometimes make the situation worse rather than better. One of the contributing factors towards over-excitement is too much physical exercise!
When dogs get too much exercise or the wrong sort of exercise it can lead to a condition that vets call ‘over-arousal’. This can be shown by an open-mouthed grin with their tongue hanging out, panting, jumping around, or barking incessantly. Sometimes, their entire body shakes!
Other dogs that are too excited spin in circles, pace back and forth or find it impossible to settle. In medical terms, they will have a high heart rate, raised blood pressure, and a high respiration rate. They may also drool excessively and have dilated pupils. These dogs have elevated levels of stress hormones in the bloodstream for long periods.
How to Calm an Over-Excited Dog
You can calm an over-excited dog using regular on-leash walks. This means that you train your dog to walk calmly by your side using the necessary commands and incentives. You could walk quite quickly so that your dog is using an easily extended trot and this creates focus but stops them from getting too excited. Also, use obedience and focus training. This requires your dog to concentrate on what you are doing. It teaches impulse control and shows them how to moderate their excitement.
Which Are the Most Excitable Dog Breeds?
All dogs can get excitable! Also, temperament varies greatly within breeds. However, some breeds are particularly prone to getting excited.
Beagles are cheerful and friendly dogs that are very social and get on with everyone. However, they can be very vocal and may bark excessively when they get wound up. You must help them to channel this excitement into something constructive.
Cairn terriers are a native Scottish breed that is lively and tenacious. They get easily bored and are highly intelligent. This can lead to them getting over-excited in some circumstances.
Yorkshire terriers are extremely popular pets and can be loving and affectionate. However, they can also be very lively and excitable. Their excitement can result in a lot of noise. You may get a tiny little dog running around your house barking at the top of their voice!
