Donuts are a beloved treat worldwide, so much so that dozens of bakery chains are dedicated entirely to that single snack. While this delicious baked good may seem simple to make, each donut shop has spent a lot of time perfecting its own recipes. Two bakers went above and beyond and created the biggest donut in the world. Keep reading to learn more!

The largest donut ever made was an American jelly donut over 3,000 lbs, 16 ft. wide. On the 21st of January in 1993, Hemstrought’s Bakeries, Donato’s Bakery, and radio station WKLL-FM made a record-breaking donut. In Utica, New York, representatives from these two bakeries came together to make a giant 3,739 pounds 16ft wide donut.  To this day, this is the largest donut ever made. It remains the world record in the Guinness Book of World Records.

While the spot for the largest donut ever made is already taken, there are plenty of other donut records that people have set. All over the world, people make videos, host events, or compete in food-eating competitions to set world donut eating or making records. This list contains only a few of the current-day records set by individuals or groups of ambitious donut lovers. These records, along with the world’s largest donut, may be broken in the future.

Biggest Donut Made of Smaller Donuts

In Sydney, Australia, Donut King is a large donut chain with more than 360 locations on the continent. In December of 2007, Donut King sent 65 employees to construct a 3.5-ton donut to celebrate the release of The Simpsons Movie on DVD. Over 90,000 donuts went into the construction of this sugary monstrosity. None of the food went to waste, though. 10,000 donuts were given to Oz Harvest, an organization that feeds the needy. The rest were given to a company that turns the methane from rotting food into electricity.

Biggest Box of Donuts

There have been two huge record-setting boxes of donuts made in the world. The first was an enormous Krispy Kreme box constructed by the Kuwait Food Co. This extreme creation measured 19 feet long, 13 feet wide, and 2 feet 10 inches deep and weighed a whopping 297 pounds. Holding 2,700 donuts, this box set the first world record for the biggest box of donuts.

In 2011 this record was broken unofficially. An Oregon-based donut shop called Voodoo Donuts set out to break this record. A massive pink box was constructed and filled with around 3,880 donuts for Portland, Oregon’s Brunch on the Bridge event. Owners of Voodoo Donuts, Tres Shannon and Kenneth “Cat Daddy” Pogson, wanted to double the previous record and created a 666-pound box of every kind of donut. The event was witnessed by a notary and a scale master, but unfortunately, it wasn’t officially recognized.

Most Donuts Sold In One Day

In May of 2022, Toms Donuts in Angola, Indiana, shattered the previous world record for most donuts made in one day. In only 8 hours, the beloved Indiana donut shop made and sold 8,558 donuts at a single location. Owner of Toms Donuts, Todd Saylor, not only holds the official Guinness World Record but his shop in Indiana is now known officially as The Donut Capital of the World.

Most Hostess Donettes Eaten In One Sitting

Holding over 50 world records for competitive eating, Joey Chestnut set another one in June 2018. Within 6 minutes, this champion competitive eater ate 257 powdered Hostess Donettes. While these donuts may be delicious, they are incredibly hard to eat at a high volume in a short amount of time. Not only did he demolish those powdered donuts, but also, two days later, he was in a competitive ice cream sandwich-eating competition, and he won!

This isn’t the only donut-eating record Chestnut has set. He even has the world record for eating 55 glazed donuts in 8 minutes. Chestnut holds world records in eating various foods, including twinkies, jalapeno poppers, gyros, Philly cheesesteaks, Taco Bell tacos, and apple pies.
