History

In the early 18th century, construction crews laid the foundation of the Basilica of Sainte Anne de Detroit. It was originally established as a mission church by French missionaries. The basilica has been an integral part of Detroit’s cultural and religious institutions.

Architecture

The church records, dating back to 1704, are the oldest parish records in Michigan and the second oldest continuously active Roman Catholic parish records in the United States.
