Poplar Bluff, located in Southeast Missouri, is the county seat of Butler County. It is also referred to as the Gateway to the Ozarks. As of 2021, this city had a population of around 16,145. Poplar Bluff is home to the largest nail manufacturer in the United States, called Mid-Continent Steel and Wire. In June 2018, it accounted for half the USA’s nail production, even though it is one of 15 nail companies in the U.S.

During its peak, the Mid-Continent Steal and Wire Company employed around 500 workers in the area, but uncertainty over steel tariffs caused concern about the plant’s future in 2018. However, in 2019, the company received a tariff exemption, which allowed it to increase production and maintain its workforce.
