Elements in Astrology: All About Air Signs

In Western astrology, each of four elements is associated with one of the 12 zodiac signs. There are three signs categorized in each element. These elemental groups are also called triplicities because they are groups of three.

In addition, there are three modalities. One of these modalities is assigned to each of the signs. There are four signs of each modality. These groups of modalities are also called quadruplicities.

The signs get their qualities from their element, modality, ruling planet, legends and myths associated with that sign, and other components of astrology that draw from thousands of years of history.

The qualities of each sign’s element can apply to whatever planet, asteroid, angle, house, or other component of astrology is in a particular zodiac sign.

Air Sign Quality: Intellectual

Air signs are smart and often intellectual. They may seem to have their head “in the clouds” and get lost in thought and conceptual ideas. Air signs enjoy learning about things. People with strong air placements in their charts are likely life-long learners. They also enjoy teaching others these ideas and make wonderful teachers. They can be very detail-oriented when it comes to information. They are likely to fact-check their work and make sure that everything is correct. However, when things don’t have a clear right or wrong answer, air signs can struggle.

Air Sign Quality: Logical

When making decisions, air signs lead with the head, not the heart. They are logic-based and do not wear their hearts on their sleeves. To others, they can seem to not have emotions at all. However, the truth of it is they do have emotions. They just run them through the filter of logic. This is great for things that logic applies to like work projects and home repairs. However, it can lead to some challenges because emotions often don’t follow any logical patterns. Air signs can have trouble allowing themselves to feel their feelings.

While air signs Gemini and Libra are most known for being talkative, even an Aquarius will charm your pants off if you get them talking about the right topic. They have social graces to make everyone feel comfortable. It’s a bit different than a water sign who uses their intuition to make people feel comfortable to open up to them about deeply emotional topics. Air sign people are more like social lubricant. They are great at including people, even shy people, and getting people to loosen up in a social environment. They can fit into many different types of social environments and know how to navigate talking to people from all different walks of life.

Air Sign Quality: Flirtatious

Air signs have a certain “sparkle” about them. Even if they are not “conventionally” attractive, there is a certain je-ne-sais-quoi. This is especially true for people who have an air sign rising sign. Air signs seem to flirt with everyone, but they don’t necessarily expect anything to happen. It’s kind of how they make friends. They are absolutely charming in social settings and know how to make people feel good with their words. Unfortunately, this can lead to some confusing situations.

One stereotype about air signs is that they are hard to pin down, just like the wind or the air. They move and think quickly, and they have many interests and things they are learning about at any given time. They are busy but might not be the best at sticking to their schedules or being on time for that matter. They change their minds easily. They may enter into a relationship enthusiastically only to lose interest a few weeks later and not fully know why. They can change their opinion about anything on a dime, given they are provided with the right information. Geminis are especially known for this, but Aquarius and Libra have a bit of this quality too, but for different reasons.

Libra: The Cardinal Air Sign

Ruled by Venus, Libras exhibit their air sign sparkle through their personal style and the decor of their home. If you walk into someone’s home and it is seriously impeccably and stylishly decorated, you might be in a Libra’s house! They also enjoy another Venusian pursuit: flirtation and romance. They are often searching for their other half, but they generally prefer to keep things light and airy in a relationship. Some Libras enjoy the search more than the relationship itself.

Libras apply the air sign qualities to theories on social relationships, structures, and culture. They use their air sign social graces to bring people together. They are amazing mediators because, as the balanced scales of the zodiac, they do more than consider all sides of an issue. Libras can actually relate to each person and are great at putting themselves in someone else’s shoes. However, this can make them appear to be indecisive. It can also make them seem socially disingenuous. They may take differing sides depending on who they are with at the moment. It’s not that they don’t have everyone’s back, it’s that they are empathizing with the person they are with at the moment.

Libras are logical, but they may be the most warm and emotional of all the air signs. They don’t easily display their emotions, but they do have a certain warmth and emotional understanding that comes from their desire to bring people together and empathize with them.

Aquarius: The Fixed Air Sign

Ruling Planet: Saturn (Traditional), Uranus (Modern)

Most Compatible Signs: Gemini, Sagittarius, Aquarius

The water bearer is an apt symbol for this humanitarian sign. Aquarius brings the air sign qualities to high ideals of society and social thinking. They love to think about the ways society functions and are apt to find ways to disrupt that. Aquarians can be a bit more serious than other air signs, due to their Saturnian influence, and they are not quite as social in terms of a party, but they are all about the social collective. You are likely to find people with strong Aquarian placements bringing people together to work on a humanitarian or social justice-oriented project.

Aquarius-forward people may feel alienated. They have strong ideals and forward-thinking ideas that might be too progressive for the current era. Some Aquarians feel so different, they wonder if they are from a different planet. Modern astrologers believe they get this quality from their modern ruler – Uranus, the planet of sudden change. Aquarians are often great with cutting-edge technology and may choose to work in the tech or science industry.

Aquarius is also a bit more restricted than the other air signs. They often focus on really making a difference in society. They can feel depressed if they feel their work is only scratching the surface or not positively impacting the world.

On a personal level, Aquarians are extremely logical. They are probably the least emotional of all the air signs. They rarely reveal their emotional side to anyone, even those who are closest to them.

Gemini: The Mutable Air Sign

Most Compatible Signs: Libra, Sagittarius, Aquarius

The mutability of Gemini really highlights their air sign qualities. Geminis are the most sociable of all the air signs. They have a special ability to fit into any social group. Geminis have a gift with words whether they are talking, texting, e-mailing, blogging, or making a podcast. They are happiest when they are learning something new, often leading them to become a jack-of-all-trades. They enjoy spreading everything that they learn, which unfortunately includes gossip about others.

Geminis don’t like to stay in the same place for long. They may move around a lot, have many different jobs, and move from relationship to relationship. They tend to get bored or even depressed if their life stays the same for too long. Geminis need adventure to be happy.

People with strong Gemini placements have a reputation for being flaky, two-faced, or duplicitous. They seem to change their mind so quickly. They may agree to something one week, and then want something completely different the next. While that may be frustrating for some people, that’s simply Gemini. They are not trying to pull the wool over your eyes. They are simply moving and thinking so quickly that their minds really do change that fast.
