Imagine the shock of discovering that you’re sharing your residence with not just one but 92 rattlesnakes. A homeowner in California made this horrifying discovery in October 2021. The homeowner called Sonoma County Reptile Rescue to report a rattlesnake infestation. The rescue team uncovered a massive infestation: 92 rattlesnakes, to be exact. Every homeowner is bound to have a few bad days but discovering 92 venomous reptiles underneath your house is definitely what nightmares are made of. Check out this homeowner’s worst nightmare!

Discovering the Rattlesnake Rookery

The unsettling discovery occurred when the homeowner noticed many rattlesnakes on their property. Because rattlesnakes are dangerous, venomous creatures, the homeowner reached out to the reptile rescue in Sonoma County. Sonoma County Reptile Rescue could never have anticipated what awaited them beneath the house.

Sonoma County is located in a low-elevation area of California, which is unsuitable for snakes. Even more, it’s uncommon that rattlesnakes would choose to live so close to humans. The rescue workers were prepared to dig up a few snakes. However, the team dug up 92 snakes in total between two visits.

During Sonoma County Reptile Rescue’s first visit, 81 rattlesnakes were collected, 22 of which were adults and 59 of which were babies. On the last visit, 11 adults were removed from the property.

What Experts Said

The number of rattlesnakes contained to one area raised a few concerns, about both the residents and the snakes. Experts carefully examined the rookery and, with the help of the rescue team, relocated the snakes to a more suitable environment—far away from homeowners or human dwellings.

Since rattlesnakes prefer warm, sheltered habitats, they probably chose the home’s foundation due to its favorable conditions. Rattlesnakes seek out secure spaces for their nests, and they must have found the house’s foundation desirable.

Avoiding This Homeowner’s Worst Nightmare

Instances like this emphasize the importance of minimizing the risk of wildlife intrusion into homes. While this might have been a random occurrence, homeowners must be mindful of areas prone to certain wildlife and seal off any potential entry points. The discovery of 92 rattlesnakes under this California house is a reminder to take preventative measures to ensure the safety of both humans and wildlife. Nobody wants to live this homeowner’s worst nightmare!
