Key Points:
  • Great white sharks are found in South Africa, Australia, and U.S. oceans.
  • Great whites have up to 300 sharp teeth.
  • In this video, a huge great white can be seen jumping out the water to grab the meat off a fisherman’s hook, like a scene out of the movie Jaws.

Imagine this, a bright and beautiful day out on the water. You’re fishing and enjoying each catch that comes in. Suddenly you see something swimming beneath the waters and are excited about getting a large catch. Only that large catch isn’t a fish.

The video below shows a fisherman out on the waters, and he has what looks like a large hook on his boat with meat on it. Along with other fish, he is likely trying to capture something bigger. He is in for the catch of a lifetime.

Suddenly, a great white shark jumps out of the water and grabs the meat. Like a scene out of the movie Jaws, this giant terror comes face to face with this fisherman. Lucky for him, he was filming the entire time. And this enormous shark came right by the camera, and with all his teeth and large eyes passing right over the camera, would make anyone terrified — even those of us sitting at home on the couch!

The great white shark (Carcharodon carcharias) of the family Lamnidae can be found in the wide open ocean, in places such as South Africa, Australia, California, and the United States.

As we can see, these sharks can be found in various places worldwide. Due to that, we may assume there are a lot of great white sharks left; however, this is not the case. Their official conservation status is considered threatened, with only 3,500 great white sharks left worldwide.

Great White Shark Physical Characteristics

Just as you would imagine, the great white shark is absolutely great and mighty in its appearance. They weigh anywhere from 2,450 to 4,938 pounds and reach lengths of 18-26 feet.

For the sake of comparison, this great white shark is about as long as five park benches. A typical bench we would see in a park is about 4-6 feet long. So, imagine five park benches floating by you; that’s what it would feel like to be alongside a great white shark.

A common question most people ask about sharks is whether or not they are aggressive. While many sharks are not aggressive, the great white shark is not one of those. The great white shark is considered the most aggressive shark in the world.

Like most animals that have no desire to pick fights or would be scared of humans, the great white shark is indeed not one of those. Due to their size and strength, animals in the ocean and humans know better than to try to mess with this predator.
