The nation is known for its beautiful architecture, agriculture, and for the heroism of its residents and military that stopped a nuclear disaster from becoming a worldwide catastrophe. Looking at the nation next to some of its neighboring countries may make you wonder, how big is Ukraine? This article is going to look at the size of the country in several measures along with how it compares in size to other large nations.

The measures used within this article are derived from the Central Intelligence Agency of the United States. As a result, some of the contested territory between Ukraine and Russia, such as Crimea and that involved with the currently ongoing Russo-Ukrainian War, may not reflect the current situation.

Square Kilometers (km2) 603,550 km2

Ukraine is 233,032 square miles, 603,550 square kilometers, and 149,140,453 acres of land. These measurements make it the 45th largest country in the world by total area. The area listed here does not reflect any changes in the country’s land holdings that have occurred since the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, a conflict that is ongoing as of this article’s publication.

At one point, Russia had captured 40,000 square miles of Ukraine’s land, nearly a fifth of the country’s land. Nevertheless, the measures above represent the internationally recognized amount of land held by the nation. These measures could change in the future.

Ukraine is a nation in Eastern Europe. The region has a very long, storied history. Most recently, the nation was once a part of the Soviet Union. However, the nation obtained its independence on August 24, 1991.

Throughout its history, Ukraine has been known for its agricultural prowess. The unique soil and climate in the country make it the perfect place to grow wheat, barley, corn, sunflower meal, and sunflower oil.

The country is far more than a farmer’s paradise, though. The nation has large, beautiful churches representing the Orthodox, Protestant, and Catholic traditions. People come from all over the world to view places like the Saint Sophia Cathedral.

The nation also has many old castles, ancient cities, and historic sites throughout its lands. Not surprisingly, the country was once a somewhat popular tourist destination for people that appreciate the study of history and religion in Europe.

The Russo-Ukrainian War began in 2014 and resulted in Russia annexing Crimea. The war escalated on February 24, 2022, when Russia invaded the Ukrainian mainland and attempted to destroy the leadership in the nation. Russia has since captured large portions of Ukraine, and the war continues along the nation’s eastern front. Tens of thousands of civilians and soldiers have died because of the war, and many others have been injured.

The Nation’s Population

The population of Ukraine was about 43.8 million people in 2021. However, the war has killed and displaced a large number of people from this area. Some estimates claim that as many as 7 million people have fled Ukraine into other parts of the European Union. Between refugees, deaths from war, and population replacement disruptions, the population of the nation could greatly decline in the future.

So, how big is Ukraine? It’s the second-largest nation in Europe, and it is currently under siege. About 20% of the country has been taken over by Russia so far, including Crimea. The future could see great changes in the amount of land that is considered Ukraine.
