Each month of the year has its own nickname for the full Moon. Essentially, a Wolf Moon is a full Moon that occurs during the month of January. This is far from the only nickname for this occurrence. January full Moons are sometimes referred to as the Moon After Yule or the Old Moon. The explanation for each of these titles varies, and the origin of the term Wolf Moon is unique. In the regions that wolves are native to, they are especially active during the month of January. Throughout history, humans have reported hearing the howling of wolves throughout the night during the winter. In the current day, many people associate the Wolf Moon with the supernatural. In fact, the fairytale of the werewolf may have been inspired by this event.

The exact origins of this name are unclear. However, it is generally agreed upon that the term “Wolf Moon” stems from Native American culture. Throughout history, many tribes used the lunar month as a form of timekeeping. According to the Eastern Trail, “Colonial Americans adopted some of the Native American full Moon names and applied them to their own calendar system (primarily Julian, and later, Gregorian).”

What You Can Expect It to Bring

What the Wolf Moon will bring you depends on your individual circumstances. Because the Wolf Moon is associated with transformation, many people believe this time should be used to look inward and focus on personal growth. Those who feel as though they are transitioning from one phase of their life into the next will feel especially sensitive during this time. The energy this event provides is perfect for those beginning new chapters, or those closing old ones. If you’ve been thinking about starting a new project, meeting new people, or picking up a new hobby, this is the perfect time.

In addition, the Wolf Moon may be able to help individuals who feel lost or directionless. This is a perfect opportunity to create vision boards, set intentions, and look inward. Throughout the rat race of life, we don’t often give ourselves enough time to slow down and think about what we really want. Try to ask yourself questions to help determine what’s lacking in your present situation. Are you happy in your career? Do your close relationships fulfill you? Are you indulging in any toxic habits? After getting to the root of things, the solution will be much clearer, and making a plan of action will be much easier.

The Wolf Moon has a myriad of spiritual interpretations. Although relationships with others in your life are important, focusing on your own well-being is even more so. This period of time gives you an opportunity to embrace your “lone wolf” side. One way to get in touch with your deeper self is to try meditation. Spending time in quiet self-reflection is a powerful tool that you can use to your advantage. Sharpening your intuition and instincts during this time can be very effective.

While some people believe that wolves howl during January due to hunger, it’s more likely that they’re calling out to their pack members. In this way, the Wolf Moon is a reminder to reconnect with your own pack. For some, this means spending time with close friends and family. For others, this might be a period of time you spend forming your pack. In some circumstances, the people we find ourselves surrounded by are unhealthy for us. Taking stock of your relationships and cutting off any that are holding you back from reaching your fullest potential is the key to future prosperity. For those of you in romantic relationships, the Wolf Moon might be a time that this commitment deepens. If you’re single, you might be meeting someone special soon. The bottom line is that the Wolf Moon is an opportunity to connect with your pack, whoever that might be!

Final Thoughts

No matter your life circumstances, the Wolf Moon provides a wealth of opportunities to help you achieve the highest version of yourself. For some, this will be going out with friends, while others will benefit from practicing self-care at home. If nothing else, the Wolf Moon is a sign that we should slow down and think about what really matters to us. In such a fast-paced world, this is a much-needed reminder.
