Why Do Rabbits Chew?

Chewing is an instinct for rabbits that helps them maintain their incisors and molars, which are constantly growing. This natural tendency is also often a result of boredom and a sign of intelligence and affection. Additionally, various factors play into chewing habits, such as gender, hormones, age, and personality. Generally, female rabbits are bigger chewers than male rabbits, but both genders do partake in the action.

If your rabbit chews a ton, simply provide the right material for it to safely practice this natural habit. Consider providing your rabbit with hay, cardboard boxes, non-treated grass mats, special toys, or other appropriate chewing materials. Additionally, make sure you’re keeping your bunny away from or covering any wires or potentially dangerous electrical cords, as bunnies will often chew whatever they can get their mouths on.

Do Rabbits Make Good Pets?

Yes, rabbits make great pets. In fact, these furry friends can help you cope with feelings of loneliness by acting as a playful, precious pal. They’re also much more low maintenance than other pets (like cats and dogs) and are easy to housebreak and train. Bunnies can even learn their names and listen to commands.

Not only that, but a rabbit’s average lifespan is between 8-12 years, which is a relatively long time to bond with your furry friend. Be sure to give them lots of cuddles, as most bunnies love to cozy up to their owners. In fact, many will even chatter their teeth as a sign of love and affection during such cuddle sessions. These social creatures are loving and full of personality. Just be sure to keep your favorite books on a high shelf!
