If you didn’t already know, shepherd is an English term meaning “sheepherder.” The name comes from the occupation that many dogs still today engage in. The national celebration day is fairly new, though, as the holiday was founded by WoofBook in 2020. The social media network caters exclusively to dog owners and in their work, they recognized the celebration was lacking. So, they encouraged owners and fans the world over to start celebrating their Aussies on January 9 each year.

The holiday still isn’t widely recognized but you can help spread the love via your own social media, activities, and events.

Celebrate Australian shepherds by learning a little bit about them:

  • Despite the name, Australian shepherds didn’t actually originate in Australia. In fact, the gorgeous breed originated in the Basque region of Spain. Later on, the breed was exported to the Western United States where the breed further saw development as the dogs spent their lives helping ranchers and cowboys herd their sheep.
  • You can find Australian shepherd’s coats in black, blue, merle, red merle, and red, as acceptable colorings in the American Kennel Club.
  • Whatever color your Aussie shepherd is, their eyes will often can be that ghostly, unique color which earned them the name of “ghost eyes” among some First Nations tribes.
  • Aussies approach the top of the list of favorites on the American Kennel Club’s annual list of most popular dogs.
  • Aussie shepherds typically live between 13 and 15 years when cared for properly and kept in good health.
