Let’s roll the calendar back to when we were kids. What is the one question you remember being repeatedly asked? “What do you want to be when you grow up?” From there we all probably had very similar answers. Many of us wanted to be teachers, policemen, army men, astronauts, or a princess.

We aimed for the moon because our young minds took us to the best of places. Well, one of the jobs in life we probably frequently wanted to be when going to the local zoo growing up was a zookeeper. Well, this zookeeper grew up and one day became one. And on this day, he was asked to do something he’d never been asked to do before as a zookeeper!

Carpet Python Sighting at the Australian Zoo

One of the zookeepers, Robert, received an interesting call one day at the Australian Zoo. He was probably assuming that there was poop involved. Or some kid wandered into an exhibit they weren’t supposed to. However, to his surprise, the call came over the radio that a carpet python had made his way into a vending machine!

As Rober approaches the vending machine, he comically adds, “There’s no chance at a free Coca-Cola.” He then proceeds to get the python out slowly. He remarks that he must be careful because he doesn’t want the python to get scared or get caught in the wiring.

Once the carpet python is safely removed, the zookeeper has the camera pan in closely to his tail. And we see that part of his tail is missing! Robert comments by saying, “This bloke has got the spirit of getting himself caught in weird situations. Cause he’s missing the end of his tail.” He then proceeds to share that because the tail is nicely healed, we can know that this is an old injury from the past.

The carpet python, also known as the Morelia spilota, is found in Australia. While it is a python, it does not have any venom, and it also is not an aggressive snake. It may be difficult for us to retrain our minds to know that not all snakes are venomous or aggressive. But, it is important to share the facts!

Carpet pythons are carnivores that are known to prey on animals such as wallabies, possums, birds, cats, and even dogs.
