Simparica Trio for Dogs: Risks, Side Effects, Dosage, and More

Why Do Dogs Need Simparica Trio?

Heartworm Prevention

Simparic works in various ways, not just controlling flea and tick infestations, but also preventing heartworms. This disease develops after mosquito bites and can lead to several severe issues, including organ damage, heart failure, and death.

Flea Prevention

Fleas are so small and elusive that you may not even realize they’re living on, feasting on, and reproducing in your dog’s fur. Without a watchful eye and appropriate prevention, they can move into your rugs, couches, and bedding, settling in and making it nearly impossible for you to relax in your own home!

In North America alone, there are about 15 different types of ticks. Your pup won’t encounter them all but there are several of those types that your pup may inadvertently give a ride and sustenance to, depending on where you live. Some of the most popular types of ticks that latch onto dogs include the black-legged tick, the lone star tick, and the American dog tick. Once these little blood suckers latch on, they irritate your dog’s skin, they can cause anemia, paralysis, and they can transmit serious diseases, including Rocky Mountain spotted fever, which leads to death in 1-10% of dogs.

Skin Protection

Although Simparica doesn’t treat skin conditions directly, it helps to prevent the development of skin conditions like flea allergy dermatitis (FAD). Dogs experience a host of issues when fleas freely feast on them, including hot spots and hair loss. By preventing fleas from settling in, Simparica protects your dog from developing sores and allergic reactions.

Side Effects of Simparica Trio for Dogs

Gastrointestinal Discomfort

Simparica, like other flea and tick medications, is generally well tolerated by pups. However, in clinical studies, the most common side effect was gastrointestinal discomfort. This could present as vomiting or diarrhea after administration. The chewable tablet alone has a liver flavor and can be administered on its own; however, it may be a good idea to provide it alongside a tasty meal or treat to help it settle in your doggo’s tummy better.

Itching

This is one of those side effects that can be frustrating to witness. Your pup’s itchiness may increase temporarily after administration of Simparica because it works quickly to kill fleas. Dying fleas may make a last attempt at survival, which can cause your pup some discomfort. However, the fleas don’t stand a chance and they’re unable to lay eggs. Your dog experiences relief soon after this side effect subsides.

Loss of Appetite

Like the other potential side effects, loss of appetite is rare. However, if your pup loses interest in the food it normally enjoys, don’t fret. This is only temporary as your pup may be experiencing a bit of tummy upset. This should clear up on its own but if any side effects persist, be sure to reach out to your veterinarian.

Lethargy

After administration of this medication, your pup may need to lie down and take a nap. You may notice they’re acting a bit sluggish — let them rest as lethargy is a reported side effect. Nevertheless, keep a close eye and make sure the symptoms don’t persist.

Signs of Simparica Trio Overdose or Allergies in Dogs

Tremors/Seizures

It’s rare when tremors or seizures occur in dogs, but an overdose of Simparica or allergic reactions may result in neurological symptoms. If you suspect an overdose or allergy, seek veterinary care right away, whether it be your regular vet or your nearest animal hospital.

Excessive Salivation

Your pup may also experience excessive salivation following a Simparica overdose. However, you’re more likely to notice muscle tremors after an overdose. To prevent accidental overdose, be sure to note the date you administer the medication on the packaging and keep other chewables away from your pup’s reach (especially since Simparica is tasty for pups and they may mistake them for treats).

Simparica Trio Risks to Consider

Overdose

Most dogs don’t exhibit any symptoms after taking Simparica but if your pup overdoses, the symptoms can be severe. It’s best to ensure this doesn’t occur by keeping Simparica and any other medications in a secure place, away from your pup’s reach.

Allergies

If you have a dog that has been diagnosed with a neurologic disorder, you may need to consider an alternative. Tremors and seizures have been reported in dogs taking Simparica, whether or not they have previously experienced seizures. However, dogs with neurologic disorders may be more susceptible to the development of these side effects.

Hypersensitivity to Active Ingredients

Some pups may be hypersensitive to the active ingredients in Simparica. If this is the case, the medication should not be administered.

If your pup is hypersensitive to the active ingredients in the flea and tick medication, your veterinarian may advise you against its use. The main ingredient in Simparica is sarolaner, which is an isoxazoline — typically, this medication does not cause adverse effects so it should be an option for most dogs. However, if your pup has experienced a neurologic event or has been diagnosed with a neurologic condition, consult with your vet before administration.

Simparica Trio Dosage Chart

This flea and tick medication is administered orally in the form of a liver-flavored chewable tablet. Its ingredients include sarolaner, moxidectin, and pyrantel. It’s not an over-the-counter medication and requires a prescription from a licensed veterinarian. It should only be administered to pups over six months old and at least 2.8 pounds. It’s indicated specifically for the treatment and control of both flea and tick infestations and heartworm prevention. In terms of dosage, it’s one chewable tablet per month each year — it’s crucial to ensure your pup takes the entire dose for it to be effective. You may provide the chewable tablet alone or with food, though, with food, you may be able to circumvent uncomfortable side effects for your pup.

Alternatives to Simparica

One of the alternatives to Simparica Trio is NexGard SPECTRA, as it also prevents heartworms, fleas, and ticks. If you’re shopping around, be sure to double-check whether a medication tackles all three or whether it’s formulated only for flea and tick infestations. You may need to administer a heartworm medication on top of a flea and tick medication like Bravecto, Frontier, or Trifexis. You might also explore natural alternatives; however, there are currently no studies confirming the efficacy of these treatments.
