The Largest Storm on Record to Hit the U.S. in June
While there are several June hurricanes on record that hit the U.S., one stands out as the largest June storm. Hurricane Audrey hit the shores of Texas and Louisiana in 1957 and was the only Category 4 hurricane in June on record in the Atlantic Basin. Hurricane Audry claimed 416 lives and is recorded as the 7th deadliest tropical cyclone. Since Audrey hit, only Hurricane Katrina has claimed more lives.
When this hurricane hit, a storm surge of 12.4 feet occurred in southwest Louisiana, and on top of the surge, massive 20-foot waves pounded the shoreline. As a result, 90 to 95 percent of buildings in Lower Vermillion and Cameron Parishes were destroyed. Lastly, hurricane Audry also flooded 1.6 million acres of land, and the vast amount of water backed up the rivers along southwest Louisiana.
Conclusion
While June is usually warm and sunny, many states on this list experience hurricane season during their summer (June-November), so always be cautious before booking a trip to the Gulf of Mexico during June. However, if there are no hurricane warnings, enjoy your summer holiday. It might rain, but most days are sunny and warm, which is especially good for people wanting to enjoy the outdoors.
