To see one tiger is an incredible privilege – to see six of them is extraordinary. This wonderful footage was captured at Umred Pauni Karhandla Wildlife Sanctuary in Maharashtra, India. This has been a tiger reserve since 2014 and is centrally located among several other Bengal tiger habitats. New tiger cubs are born here every year indicating that it is now a successful breeding population. It has a good prey base, plenty of water, and is a haven for tigers in this region.

Where Do Tigers Normally Live?

The Bengal tiger (Panthera tigris tigris) is found on the Indian sub-continent so they can be spotted in some parts of India, Nepal, Bhutan, Myanmar, and Bangladesh. Historically, the distribution was much wider but they have lost over 90 percent of their former range.

Tigers tend to live in habits where the vegetation is dense. They can be found in both temperate and tropical forests. They can also tolerate swamp and mangrove habitats. Typically, tigers will try to avoid environments where there are a lot of humans.

A water supply is a fundamental requirement for them. They also need sufficient prey and plant cover so that they can hunt that prey effectively. On the whole, if the habitat can support a large number and variety of ungulates, it can support tigers.

How Do Tigers Normally Behave?

You will find tigers being active both during the day and at night. They can alter their activities so that they match their peak activity with that of their prey. Another factor that influences their activity is the weather. They will modify their behavior so that they can remain cool – lying partially submerged in shaded pools during the hottest part of the day.

Even though tigers are described as solitary animals, they do associate with other tigers sometimes. However, they do not live in organized groups as lions do for example.

Cubs remain with their mother until they are about two years old. Occasionally, males may associate with a female tiger and her cubs. There are recorded sightings in India where males have spent time with a female and her cubs – they have even shared kills. This particular family contains older cubs and adults and they seem to be getting on the very well!
