Why Do Honey Bees Sting?

Honey bees aren’t like other flying insects that behave aggressively and sting more than once. They generally prefer to mind their own business. If a honey bee does sting, it’s because of some kind of attack. Maybe you accidentally leaned against one, kicked one, or otherwise made it feel as if something big and predatory was out to get them. Honey bees may also sting when they’re confused. When they sting, that’s it for them. If the stinger has made it into your skin, that bee is soon to die.

Honey bees may nest in either outdoor spaces like tree hollows, or they may build much lower, even venturing below ground. When around man-made structures, they may find brick and siding an attractive place for a nest. They may also prefer to build a nest in the eaves of your home, under your outdoor shed, or even around concrete blocks. Typically, these aren’t easy to find, but if you follow a bee, it may just lead you to where home is.

When the video starts, the man is filming a massive bee nest as he explains that what you’re looking at is beneath the bottom of a cabinet. He’s cool as a cucumber as he gets up close to film the hive — they’re buzzing wildly, huddled together while he shines a spotlight on them. He goes on to explain that there are only about three inches of space beneath the cabinet, and the honey bees are packed into it.

He’s not sure just how far back the honeycomb goes, but he’s assuming that it goes all the way back. The next scene cuts to him trying to lift the cabinet piece. It’s heavy, and the honeycomb is sticking a bit. However, he manages to lift it. The video slows, and music starts playing as he looks over to the other side, turning the entire cabinet piece around to show the massive bee nest. It’s incredibly intricate and well-built. He turns it over so it’s face up as he places it on a counter. The scene is unreal!
