Great white sharks (Carcharodon carcharias) are found in oceans all over the world. Some experts claim that they are descendants of the terrifying Megalodon which is one of the largest sharks to have ever lived, although recent evidence suggests that they were more likely descended from the Broad-toothed Mako. They have a torpedo-shaped body and can grow to over 25 feet in length – they can also weigh up to nearly 5,000 pounds.

Their usual diet is seals, sea lions and dolphins and some people think this is why they are so interested in divers in wet suits – they look a little like a dark seal! This poor diver is very close to those sharp teeth and if you listen carefully, you can hear the clang as they hit the metal bars of the cage. Great whites have 300 serrated, triangular teeth and these are arranged in rows. If they lose one, it is not a problem because they are replaced continuously. Each tooth can be over two inches in length and are used for killing and ripping prey apart.

How Dangerous Are Great White Sharks?

Great white sharks are the stars of many movies and have a reputation for being aggressive and dangerous. But is that reputation justified?

In terms of aggression, yes it probably is. These guys are carnivores and apex predators. They have to attack and kill other animals to survive so aggression has to be part of their behavior. Humans are not the natural prey of great whites – there are not enough humans in the oceans to support their populations and we would not provide the correct nutrients. There is little evidence to suggest that sharks want to eat us – even when they attack humans, they rarely eat the whole body. Of course, a starving shark may not turn down a human snack!

However, there are several theories for why great whites may attack humans and they are all fascinating. The leading theory is that it is a case of mistaken identity and they think we are seals or something similar. They may also be attracted by the sound we make and to any blood or urine that we release into the water. It may simply be a case of confusion or even self-defense!
