Watch as Thousands of Tiny Baby Sea Turtles Race Out of Their Nest Toward the Ocean

There are few sights more beautiful to see than thousands of sea turtles rushing across the open beach to go to the water for the first time in their life! Their mother has put them there, where they have incubated for up to two months. 

Now it is time for these sea turtles to emerge from their nests and walk across the beach to live where nature intended. A group in Cozumel, Mexico, volunteered to help these emerging sea turtles make their way safely into the ocean. The video below captures this beautiful event.

 Not only to ensure they get where they need to be but also to ensure no predators roaming the beach or even people messing with this miraculous event.

We see a small dugout on the beach where thousands of sea turtles are piled on each other. They slowly start to dig their way out of their nest, and we see the volunteers help to pave the way by hand.

They dig the sand out so the sea turtles can crawl their way out. Now that their hole is hollowed out, they can climb out. And we see thousands of sea turtles make their way out.

This is when the camera pans, and we see two lines of people on either side of the sea turtles watching this incredible event take place. 

Do Sea Turtles Live 100 Years?

Remember the movie Nemo where he wanted to meet a sea turtle that was 150 years old? Unlike that movie, sea turtles don’t live to be 150 years old. But do they live to be 100 years old?

According to the Ocean Service, they do estimate that sea turtles can live anywhere from 50-100 years. Regardless, they live a very long life, which is why many can reach well over 50 years. 

How Big Do Sea Turtles Get?

Sea turtles sizing largely depends on their species. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, there are currently seven known species of sea turtles. 

Most sea turtles weigh anywhere from 249-907 kilograms (550-2,000 pounds.) So, as we can see, there is a large variation in how big these guys can get. 

As omnivores, sea turtles will keep up their weight by maintaining a diet of fish, sponges, mollusks, crabs, seaweed, and jellyfish.
