At the start of this video shown below, a massive eagle is seen flapping his wings in the water. It might take a moment to see that the eagle is not simply standing in water but on top of a giant monitor lizard!

You heard right; this eagle is standing on the lizard, almost as if to say, “Surf’s up dude” and glides along the lake. While the eagle might be having a great time, the lizard clearly is not. At first, it may be hard to tell what’s going on. It looks like a huge eagle is floating casually in the water. Suddenly, you realize it’s sunken its claws into a huge monitor lizard! That’s when the struggle begins.

Watch until the end, it may surprise you! Check it out:

The massive bird continues pushing down on the lizard, which submerges the lizard in the water. In an effort to keep his head on the surface, the lizard is seen kicking his little legs and tail to stay afloat.

This doesn’t phase the eagle, and he spreads his wings out as he surfs by and ‘hang ten’ to his fellow birds on the beach watching. He has no plans of getting off anytime soon as they continue down the water current.

The lizard tries to swim a little faster to try and get away from the eagle’s grip. The massive eagle grips his claws tighter around the lizard, picks him up, and flies towards a little island patch in the middle of the water.

This seems like the perfect opportunity to escape, and the lizard makes a run for it; however, the eagle is not willing to part with the lizard yet, and he picks him up with the lizard writhing below. The lizard is trying to get out of the eagle’s grip with all his might.

Another bird is seen trying to swoop in, thinking the eagle might share. The eagle lets out a call and flaps his wing. This lizard is his.

What Do Eagles Eat?

Unlike a variety of birds that will eat animal carcasses that have been left as road kill or leftover food from other animals, eagles prefer to eat their prey live. As carnivores, eagles will enjoy food such as fish, snakes, small rodents, and small mammals.

An interesting fact about eagles is that they have exceptional vision. They are able to see over two miles away from wherever they are flying or perched. And they use this to their advantage when hunting for their food.

Eagles often lie in wait perched in a tree, waiting for the perfect opportunity to strike without their prey noticing. When an eagle is ready, he can dive at over 100 mph! With speeds like this, it is almost impossible for the prey to outrun this predator.

Do Lizards Swim?

Most lizards we may think of are the cute little ones crawling up the outside of our houses. However, this monitor lizard is the exact opposite. Picture this, a small Godzilla!

There are various giant lizards such as the most famous being the Komodo Dragon, Asian Water Monitor, and Crocodile Monitor. The Komodo Dragon is one of the most giant lizards known and can reach up to 10 feet long.

Even with their intimidating stature, for a lizard, they can swim quite fast. While on land, they can run up to 12 mph, they can also swim several mph in the water too!
