When we think of the apex predator in the animal kingdom, our minds typically go to the king of the jungle, the lion. And when we think of an animal so fierce, we like to think of them as invincible. However, even lions need a break. They aren’t invincible. They get tired, bleed, and can get beaten just like any other animal in the wild. And we see a young lion below who just needs a break after a long night of hunting.
Lion Sighting in Kruger National Park
Our next YouTube video, posted at the bottom of this blog post, takes us to the Kruger National Park. This National Park is a large game reserve in South Africa. This video was filmed and shared by the Sunshine and Sand Dollars. They share their mission for what they do below.
“Sunshine and Sand Dollars is a husband and wife adventure blog where we showcase all the things in life that we love! Mark & Brittany – Ohio transplants living the Florida dream while working hard to see the world. Our passions in life are photography, travel & animals – combining them at any chance is a dream come true!”
Lion Cuddling
At the start of this video posted below, we hear the sounds of the tour vehicle leading through the Kruger National Park. They have caught sight of a young lion walking through an open field. And they are following him closely to see where he is going.
We hear the sounds of them speeding up a little bit but ensuring to stay out of the way. Then they notice that up ahead, another lion is lying in the grass. The young lion has made his way over to the adult lion, and they stop their tour to see the younger lion lying right down next to the adult lion and cuddling up close.
How Do Lions Hunt?
Lions live in groups called prides. Prides can range anywhere from 3-30 lions. When it is time to hunt, the pride will go out together and hunt as a group. The lionesses are the ones in charge of hunts within the pride. While lion prides hunt together, sometimes, male lions will hunt alone outside of the pride.
According to a Kruger National Park page, “Lions hunt either alone or in prides. In collaborative hunts, it is usually the lioness who initiates the kill. Lions stalk their prey and, when close enough, attempt a short charge on their prey, trying either to pounce on their target or knock it over.”
