What was the original purpose of the Labrador Retriever breed?
The Labrador Retriever originated in Newfoundland, Canada and is believed to date back to around the 15th century when small water dogs were bred with Newfoundlands to get what was then the St. John’s Water dog, which is now extinct. This new breed of dog had webbed paws and fur that repelled water which made them a perfect choice for the fishermen that owned them and would utilize them for retrieving items from the water.
In the early 1800s, the St. John’s Water Dog became a popular export to the United Kingdom where the Earl of Malmesbury discovered these dogs were great for use in shooting sports, swimming and running and began a breeding program where they called them Labrador Dogs.
