Georgia is a southern state that shares borders with several states as well as the Atlantic Ocean. Despite being the 24th largest state, Georgia has the 8th highest population of any state in the U.S. with 10.8 million residents. Almost half a million people live in the city of Atlanta, and roughly 6 million people live in the extended metropolitan area. So, where is Atlanta located on a map, and what are some interesting aspects of the city?

We’ll show you where to find this city as well as where people like to go and where they live nearby.

Where Is Atlanta Located?

Atlanta is located in the northwestern part of the state of Georgia. The city is located in both Fulton and DeKalb Counties in Georgia. Atlanta is the capital city of the state of Georgia, and it is a major business and transportation hub in the region.

Several interstate highways run through and around the city, including:

  • I-20
  • I-75
  • I-85
  • I-285
  • I-675

Also, the Chattahoochee River flows on the western boundary of Atlanta. Finding Atlanta on a map is made easier by knowing about the numerous interstate highways and bodies of water in the area.

Atlanta was founded in 1837, and it was an important location during the Civil War, Reconstruction, and throughout modern history where it was transformed into a transportation and economic hub.

These days, Atlanta is known for having the headquarters of Fortune 500 companies including Home Depot, Coca-Cola, and a few others. Georgia continues to grow in population as people move to the area to take advantage of the economic situation and lower home prices compared to other places in the city.

Georgia Aquarium

The Georgia Aquarium is the largest one in the United States. This structure contains more than 11 million gallons of water, including 6.3 million gallons of water in a single tank. Georgia Aquarium contains 60 different animal habitats for people to view. The aquarium is so large that it has room for beluga whales and various species of sharks.

Piedmont Park

Piedmont Park features over 200 acres of natural space that is similar to Central Park in the sense that it is located in the heart of a city. The park is a great place for people to take part in walking, fishing, and various sports. Piedmont Park is an oasis away from the hubbub of the main city, and many people use it to relax before or after going to work.

World of Coca-Cola

The World of Coca-Cola is a museum dedicated to the Coca-Cola brand. The soda company museum features tours that showcase the history of the internationally recognized brand. Visitors get to see a wide variety of different old soda machines, delivery vehicles, bottles, and more. Going on the tours may yield the opportunity to try free samples of soda. People that want to understand how the brand rose up to become such an icon in the business world can learn a lot in this area.

Ponce City Market

The Ponce City Market is a mixed-use structure that contains 2.1 million square feet and sits on a 16-acre piece of land. The building has stores, homes, education areas, and much more. Several large companies operate out of this market. The building was a former Sears building, but it was converted into its modern format in 2014. The city proper of Atlanta is only home to about 500,000 people. However, millions more live in the greater Atlanta area. That means that most of them are found in the suburbs of the main city. Consider some of the best suburbs near the city and see why people value them so much.

East Cobb

East Cobb is an unincorporated town and a major suburb to the north of Atlanta. About 175,000 people live in this area. The area is known for having low crime, and it’s rated a very good place to live. The drawback is that the suburb is a bit on the expensive side. East Cobb also has some very good schools. People that drive into the city can expect a commute of about 30 minutes to 60 minutes from this location.

Duluth

Duluth is a fair drive to the northeast of Atlanta. The average drive is about 40 minutes to 60 minutes depending on the time of day and traffic. However, this suburb comes with a lot of benefits. For example, Duluth is known for feeling like a city within a city since the area is dense. The area has many homes, restaurants, shops, and parks. Also, the region has very good schools and high ratings for safety.

Lawrenceville

Lawrenceville is a great place for families and young professionals. The schools are very good and the suburb is continually growing. Lawrenceville is located to the northeast of Atlanta, and it takes about 45 to 75 minutes to drive into the heart of the city. However, some mass transit options are available too. Lawrenceville has many small businesses and attractions like the Aurora Theatre, Lawrenceville Shopping Center, and Lawrenceville City Lake.

These are just a few of the suburbs of Atlanta that people love.
