Many people think of flowers as a thoughtful yet inexpensive gift. The average consumer can expect to pay between $15 to $100 for a bouquet of flowers, yet there are many circumstances in which flowers can fetch a much higher price. Bridal arrangements and Saffron Crocuses may come to mind when pondering the priciest of flowers. However, even the world’s most expensive bridal bouquet doesn’t hold a candle to the world’s rarest and most expensive orchid, the Shenzhen Nongke.
History of the Shenzhen Nongke Orchid
Although some people may think that this story is a hoax, the Shenzhen Nongke Orchid is a very real record-breaking work of art. Despite the fact that most people haven’t heard of them, man-made flowers do exist. The Shenzhen Nongke Orchid is a part of this category, and likely the most famous flower among them.
This flower is named after the group of agricultural researchers at Shenzhen Nongke University in China who spent nearly eight years of their lives developing it. Since its creation, this flower has gained global attention for its striking, unique beauty and utter rarity. It only blooms once roughly every four or five years, so each flower is precious beyond measure. In addition, each flower only lasts for about six weeks, even under the most attentive care. This, combined with the fact that it isn’t found in nature, makes its monetary value immeasurable.
How the Shenzhen Nongke Orchid Became the Most Expensive Flower Ever Sold
The Shenzhen Nongke Orchid has captured the attention of agriculturalists, orchid enthusiasts, and eccentric millionaires alike. When this flower was brought to auction in 2005, it was widely accepted that it would fetch an incredible price. Despite this, no one could have predicted the heights it would soar to. According to TipsPR, “…an anonymous bidder bought this orchid flower for £160,000, making it the most expensive flower ever sold. One plant of Shenzhen Nongke orchid now costs over $200,000.” This makes this flower more than the median price of a Lamborghini.
You may be wondering to yourself if the average person is able to propagate this precious flower. The short answer to this question is maybe. The truth is that even if someone was able to get their hands on Shenzhen Nongke Orchid seeds, the care needed to maintain them is incredible. A sterile environment is required to give the seeds the best chance possible at germinating. In the case that they do, a long period of growth and development would follow before flowers would bloom. The minimum expectancy for this would be four or five years. In addition, these flowers are sensitive to even the slightest changes in light, temperature, humidity, and the amount of water they’re given. Only the most diligent and focused individuals could hope to raise them to maturity.
Final Thoughts
While some people praise this orchid as a landmark in agricultural history, others criticize it for promoting consumerism and the commodification of nature. Although this orchid is a bit controversial, it serves as a symbol of mankind’s capacity to engineer complex lifeforms. Whether you love or hate the Shenzhen Nongke Orchid, it’s hard to deny the fact that it was a trailblazer and paved the way for even loftier feats of human creation.
