Parakeets are a group of small to medium-sized parrots with long tails. When you say “parakeet,” many people think of budgies, but many other common pet birds also belong to the parakeet group, such as cockatiels. All parakeets can eat bananas alongside other fruits, vegetables, and seeds.

Bananas are safe for healthy parakeets when fed in moderation, but they shouldn’t eat more than a few slices a day. If your parakeet has ongoing health issues, speak to your veterinarian before adding any new foods to their diet.

In this article, we’ll talk more about whether parakeets can eat bananas, the pros and cons, and how to serve bananas to your parakeet.

What do Parakeets Eat?

Parakeets typically eat a variety of fruit, vegetables, nuts, and seeds in their diet. While their diet primarily consists of plant matter, and many pet birds are fed a vegetarian diet, wild parakeets are omnivores who will also eat insects when given the opportunity.

Fruit like bananas should be fed in small amounts, with the bulk of your bird’s diet consisting of grain and seeds. Since fruit is high in sugar, it can cause stomach upset and other health problems when fed too frequently.

Bananas are safe for healthy parakeets so long as they’re fed in small amounts. However, they may be unsafe for parakeets with health problems such as kidney or liver disease or diabetes. Bananas are high in both sugar and potassium.

Even healthy birds may experience stomach upset or spikes in blood sugar if fed too much banana. Remember that even large parakeets are very small compared to humans, and what feels like a small piece can be a sizable portion for them.

Does Ripeness Matter?

Parakeets can eat bananas no matter how ripe they are. However, you should never feed your parakeet bananas that you wouldn’t eat yourself, such as if the banana is green or the fruit is rotten.

It’s best to wait until the bananas are fully ripe, as unripened bananas contain more starch. Too much starch isn’t good for birds.

However, overripe brown bananas contain more sugars, which also aren’t great for your parakeet.

So, yellow bananas are healthiest–but so long as you only feed bananas in small quantities, it’s okay to feed brown bananas occasionally.

How much banana to serve your parakeet will depend on their health and size. Larger parakeets can have larger portions than smaller ones like budgies.

As a general rule, you don’t want to give them more than a few slices of banana a day, combined with other fruits and vegetables. It’s unhealthy for your parakeet to have too much sugar or starch in their diet.

If your parakeet has a health problem, especially one that requires dietary restrictions, please talk to your veterinarian before feeding any new foods.

There are three ways you can feed bananas to your parakeet:

  • Fresh and cut into small pieces
  • Fresh and mashed
  • Dried without added sugars or preservatives

Remember to feed only small amounts of banana–a few slices at most. When first serving any new food to your bird, introduce it in tiny amounts and monitor them afterward for signs of digestive upset.

If your parakeet doesn’t finish all of their banana, remove it from their dish so that it doesn’t rot or attract pests, such as fruit flies.

Parakeets should not eat banana peels.

What Fruit Can Parakeets Not Eat?

Parakeets can eat most fruits, but some are toxic to them. Avoid feeding your parakeet avocados and citrus fruits such as oranges and lemons. Although citrus is not technically toxic, it can cause stomach problems.

Many fruit pits also contain toxins, such as cherries, apples, and peaches. All of these fruits are safe so long as the pit and seeds are removed.

I hope this article has helped you to learn more about what your parakeet can and cannot eat! Remember that bananas are healthy for most parakeets so long as they’re fed in moderation and without the peel.
