There are so many unique cities around the world. The cities all start with different letters, of course. Some cities start with the letter A, while others start with the letter I. Regarding the letter C, there are a whopping 604 cities. But which ones are they? Let’s highlight a few cities that start with the letter C and then below, we’ll provide a comprehensive list of 600+ cities from around the world that start with C.

Cairo

Cairo is the capital of Egypt.

With a population of 10 million, Cairo means “the Vanquisher” in Arabic. The city’s full name is “the Vanquisher of al-Mu’izz.” The name was established after the Fatimid dynasty decided to designate the city as the capital of Egypt.

Chongqing

Chongqing, with a population of 31 million, is in China.

Named in 1189, Chongqing means “Double Blessed.” The Nan Song dynasty named the city because the city was a critical and crucial place that was critically placed between the prefectures of Shunqing and Shaoqing.

Chennai

Chennai, India

Chennai, with a population of 6.7 million, is in India.

There was a Nayak ruler named Chennappa Nayaka, which is how the name Chennai came about. However, Chennai is also known as Madras. This name, although used almost exclusively by the British and Indians after the British conquest, was potentially used in the 1300s.

Cape Town

Cape Town is one of the capitals of South

Africa

.

With a population of 4.7 million, a Portuguese explorer arrived in 1488 and decided to name it “Cape of Storms,” but King John II of Portugal later changed its name to “Cape of Good Hope,” which is where the legendary Flying Dutchman lives. The city’s name was later shortened to Cape Town.

Casablanca

Casablanca, with a population of 3.3 million, is in Morocco.

Called “Anfa” thousands of years ago, the city was renamed “The White House” after it was rebuilt following the 1755 earthquake that destroyed the city. When the French took over Morocco, they renamed the city to Casablanca.

Chicago

St. Regis - Chicago

Chicago is the third-most populous city in the US.

Nicknamed the Windy City, Chicago comes from the Miami-Illinois word “shikaakwa” which is a close relative of the vegetable onion. The first written statement on Chicago was when Frenchman Robert de LaSalle referred to it as “Chicagou” in 1679.

Copenhagen

Copenhagen, Denmark, Architecture, Street, Landscape - Scenery

Copenhagen is the capital of Denmark.

In Old Norse, the city was called Kaupmannahofn, which means “merchants’ harbor.” This is because Copenhagen is a harbor and a key location for the country’s commercial and economic endeavors.

Cancun

Cancun beach with boat

Cancun is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world.

The Mayas called the city Nizuc, which meant “point of grass.” However, the name Cancun comes from the Mayan words for “snake” and “to overfill.” This was because there were many Mayan snake drawings throughout the Nizuc pre-Colombian site.

Chula Vista

Otay Lakes Sunrise

Chula Vista, with a population of 280,000, is in the US.

The second-largest city in San Diego County, Chula Vista means “beautiful view” in Spanish. The name came about because of a dam that was decided to be constructed in 1888 so that Chula Vista, which had many lemon orchards and farmland, could be irrigated.

Cannes

The city of Cannes

Cannes is known for its Film Festival.

There is no concrete definition of what Cannes means. The city was known as Canua in the 10th century, which could have been derived from “canna” meaning reed. Today, the Cannes Film Festival takes place here every May.
