Istanbul is in both Europe and Asia. The city’s name came about from the medieval Greek phrase that meant “to the city.”  The city was referred to as Constantinople until the Ottoman Empire ceased to exist and Turkey became an independent nation. It has been referred to as Istanbul since then.

Ibadan is the third largest city in Nigeria. The name came about because of the phrase “Eba Odan,” which means in Yoruba, the edge of the meadow. At the time that it was coined, there were a lot of unfortunate events happening in Yorubaland and city names were starting to be renamed.

Incheon is located in South Korea and it is an old city. Some records state that Incheon was a city in Korea in 475 AD, but it was named Michuhol back then. Over the years, the name changed when a new dynasty came into power. It was referred to as Inju or Gyeongwon during the Goryeo era. It wasn’t until 1413 that the name was changed to Incheon.

Before the Spanish conquered Mexico, the Chichimecas lived there, followed by the Purépechas. They called the settlement they built Xiriquitzio, however, when the Spanish arrived, they called it Jiricuato instead. Jiricuato meant “the place with low dwellings.” The name somehow evolved into Irapuato.

Issy comes from Issiacum, which means “estate of Isicius” in Medieval Latino. Isicius was a Gallo-Roman landowner. The city used to be called Issy, but the latter part was added in 1893 because of the hamlet Les Moulineaux, which was located in the commune of Issy.
