No matter where you live in the world, you can find many colors that represent friendship. As human beings, we connect many different types of emotions or concepts to colors, both consciously and subconsciously. In fact, color theory relies heavily on psychology in its endeavor to assign meaning and significance to each and every color that we see. But what colors typically represent and are associated with friendship? 

While emotions associated with color vary from person to person and personal experience, there are some universal colors that represent friendship. Today, we will discuss what those colors are, why they are symbolically associated with friendship, and where you can find them out in the world to better contemplate your own amicable experiences. Many different colors represent friendship, including yellow, blue, green, pink, and purple. Certain shades of turquoise and teal are also closely linked to friendship. Given that friendship and close friend groups often involve personal stories and one-of-a-kind connections, you may have other colors in mind when you think of these types of relationships. 

Around the world, these colors are most readily associated with friends and friendships. But why have we developed universal meanings for some of these colors? Let’s discuss these colors in detail and why they might be connected to the concept of friendship now. 

1. Yellow

Of all of the colors on this list, yellow is likely the most readily associated with friendship. This is in part due to symbology dating back to Victorian times. In the 1800s, flowers were often utilized in secret messages and as gifts for loved ones. 

Full of deeper meanings and symbolism, yellow roses in particular became known as flowers representing friendship. During this time, yellow roses were in fact unwelcome gifts, as they often represented a downgrade in your relationship status! Nowadays, friendship is still readily associated with yellow roses and yellow flowers in general, but often in a more positive light. 

The color yellow is connected to optimism and happiness, which may explain why it represents friendship very well. It is a joyous color and is meant to be shared with those you love, especially close friends. 

2. Blue

Have you ever heard the phrase “true blue friend”? The color blue is a tranquil, calm color often connected to friendship. While the color blue may also represent sadness or sensitivity, certain shades are synonymous with close friend groups. It is a reassuring color that encourages intimate, empathetic connections. Few things are more compassionate than close friends, which is why the color blue represents these relationships well. 

Turquoise and teal are shades of blue that are often associated with friendship. Perhaps the somewhat playful feelings associated with these shades allow them to represent friendship better than royal blue or other, darker shades of blue. Regardless, all shades of blue have the potential to represent friendship, especially in relation to our personal experiences! 

3. Green

Synonymous with new growth and endurance, the color green represents a friendship that stands the test of time. It is more than a color of beginnings and hopefulness in regard to friendship. This color represents lasting, loyal friends, friends that you grow and change with. While the color green may not exactly represent your friendships currently, it may become more important to you as your relationships grow! 

4. Pink

Gentle and tender, the color pink is often associated with friendships. While this color may have a feminine connotation, it is connected to love and compassion more than anything else. This is a great color to connect to nurturing friendships and the empathy of two best friends. Pink is also connected to happiness and optimism, similar to the color yellow.

The color purple has many similarities and meanings as the color pink, but it is also connected to creativity. This color represents creative connections and friendships that are formed through circumstances such as these. There is also a luxurious and royal meaning to the color purple, something that may point to indulgence in your close friend group!

Symbolically, all of the colors that represent friendship have connections to positive emotions. There are symbolic representations of friendship in certain colors, representations that date back hundreds of years. Any color that makes us feel happy, sociable, and connected is a color naturally representative of friendship. It’s easy to feel as if everything is possible when we are with our friends. This same notion of possibility can be found in open blue skies and deep waters. New beginnings are possible within this color. You might choose to seek these themes out in deep green forests on a hike with those closest to you!
