Filmed in the Riverstone coulees located in a quiet southwest corner of Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada, this clip is about a reported nest of rattlesnakes. A young biker has accidentally ridden his bike into the den and has called in the experts to help him get it back out! When the snake expert finally reaches the biker, he is near a sunny ridge that is the location of several snake dens. He walks carefully towards the bike and discovers one snake relaxing in the sun. By the bike itself, there are no snakes because they have moved away. Using a hook, he lifts the bike up and returns it to the young rider. This was most likely a prairie rattlesnake, Alberta’s only venomous snake.

How Do Snake Wranglers Safely Handle Venomous Snakes?

Only trained experts should remove venomous snakes.

In this clip, the snake wrangler did not actually have to handle a venomous snake as they had fled the scene. Only trained and experienced individuals should try to remove venomous snakes. Staying alert and keeping your distance as much as possible is vital.

Most removals of medium-sized snakes are carried out using a snake hook. These are usually made from stainless steel and are a long rod with a hook at the end which allows you to move the snake without getting too close to them. Snake wranglers wear gloves and protective clothing made from strong materials such as denim, leather, or canvas. Using the hook, they lift the snake’s upper body. Then place it in a secure plastic container with a lid for removal.

What Precautions Should Be Taken When Encountering A Rattlesnake Den?

Experts at the University of Florida advise on what to do if you encounter what you think is a rattlesnake den. Start by keeping children and pets away whilst you identify the snakes as rattlesnakes. The rattle is the obvious sign! Do this from a safe distance.  Startled snakes will try to make a break for cover. So don’t get in between them and nearby covers such as bushes, undergrowth, and rocks. Call in the experts to remove it if it is on your property. There are expert snake wranglers in all areas who will know exactly what to do!
