There are beaches and rainforests, gorgeous country sides and coastal living. The culture is rich, the weather is balmy, and you already know this because it’s on your vacation destination list. But you’re wondering what time of the year is best to explore this tropical country. No worries. Below, discover the best time to visit Costa Rica for ideal weather!

Average Temperatures in Costa Rica

The average temperatures are 80 degrees Fahrenheit to 90 degrees Fahrenheit along the coast, though it changes to 75 degrees Fahrenheit or 80 degrees Fahrenheit in the countryside. Every ocean shore has gorgeous scenery and offers plenty of activities. This is a family-friendly environment where you can relax and immerse yourself in the moment.

If you want to see crystal blue waters and enjoy near-perfect temperatures, Costa Rica makes for the ultimate destination. This country offers something for everyone, whether you’re looking for a relaxing vacation by the beach or love putting detailed itineraries together. No matter which way you vacation, you can forget about work and focus on the beauty that surrounds you.

Hottest/Coldest Days on Record

Limón is the warmest region in Costa Rica while Alajuela is the coldest. The hottest temperature ever recorded occurred in Puntarenas, however. It was March of 1999 when the record high reached 97.7 °F. There is also a record for the hottest summer, which was recorded in 1997. The average temperature was 81.14 °F. This average temperature included daily lows.

Interestingly, the coldest temperature ever recorded occurred in Limón, the area known for being the warmest. The Puerto Limón weather station recorded the temperature at 54.7 °F in November of 2013. The coldest winter season occurred in 2005 when the average temperature was a mere 75 °F. Costa Rica doesn’t reach extreme temperatures and offers a humid, tropical climate for residents and visitors.

Year-round, temperatures are pleasant, and the winter season doesn’t exactly get cold. It just gets wetter. The country gets plenty of sunlight, which makes it warm throughout the year, no matter the season. The tropical weather does have its downsides, however. Costa Rica has seen several natural disasters over the years — some more severe than others.

Natural Disasters in Costa Rica

Costa Rica is in an area that sees hurricanes. Certain locations have endured massive storms. When hurricanes occur, it’s usually about four times a year in Limon, Alajuela, and Guanacaste from June to November. The rainy season is usually from May to November though the wettest months are September and October. This is considered winter in the country. Prices are favorable during this period and you’re less likely to encounter crowds. January to April makes up part of the dry season. The temperatures, on average, are 79 °F in January, 80 °F in February, 82 °F in March, and 83 °F in April.

Best Time to Visit Costa Rica for Ideal Weather

December through April is the best time to visit as it is the driest season of the year. March and April are usually the warmest months, and you can expect temperatures to reach 90 °F. The dry season is the most visited and rightly so. Many tourists plan for the best weather, but it is not so easy on your pocket as it is the peak time of the year to visit. It’s well worth it for the perfect weather, however! If you are planning to travel from the U.S. and want to save some serious money, take your vacation in May. You can have the best of both worlds: good weather and a more affordable trip!

Things To Do in Costa Rica

Take in the scenery by hiking over to see the waterfalls. They’re unforgettable. There are quite a few places to choose from, so your itinerary will never be empty (unless you want it to be!).

There are hot springs in Arenal Volcano that deliver a rejuvenating experience. Or you can take an ATV tour to explore the outdoors or go horseback riding! These activities are available in many different regions. If you are the type who loves the rush of adrenaline, try white-water rafting or kayaking.

To explore the culture, visit the capital of Costa Rica: San Jose. Here, you are immersed in the culture. The locals are warm and welcoming, and you’re presented with the opportunity to interact with an ancient heritage. Even though most people only speak Spanish you will find English speakers in the most visited areas.
